iSTORYA.net (I): What made you write “Lolang Kunot”?
Max Surban (MS): You still remember that? (surprised) The song, “Lolang Kunot,” was my first song sa recording. Actually, di unta nako na kantahon kay naanad man ko sa ballad gud, balladeer man ko. Pero ila gipilit nako bah kay ako ra man available mokanta ato so ako gitanggap ang challenge then just after the release, ni hit ang kanta.
(The song, “Lolang Kulot,” was my first song in recording. Actually, I wasn’t supposed to do it because I was used to singing ballad songs since I’m a balladeer. However, they insisted because I was the only one available to sing it so I accepted the challenge then just after the release, the song became a hit.)
I: You started out as a balladeer in the 60’s, do you ever miss singing ballads?
MS: Yes, I do.
I: What are your favorite ballad songs?
MS: Daghan man ‘day, mga standard songs like songs ni Frank Sinatra, mga foreign singers.
(There are so many – standard songs of Frank Sinatra and other foreign singers.)
I: Where do you get materials for your songs? Are all your songs based from experiences?
MS: Akong creation, akong ideas, kanang moabot sa akong pang isip, buhaton nako.
(My creation, my ideas that would come to mind then I write about it.)
I: What inspires you to write your music?
MS: People are my inspiration. I always make sure that when they listen to my songs, they will be entertained.
I: From the song, “I Love My Titser,” who’s that teacher you can’t forget and why?
MS: During my high school time, naa mi teacher na sexy kaau bah, kami mga boys mga kauban nako nay uban maldito, ingon daun mi, gwapa man au sya, Miss Garcia iya ngalan, so karon dugay na to, maisip gihapon nako siya so nagbuhat ko og kanta, si Miss Garcia teaching English sa USP.
(… we have an English teacher in USP who’s so sexy. My classmates and I find her so beautiful. Miss Garcia is her name. Then after so many years, I remembered her and decided to write a song about her.)
I: What’s your message to all Cebuanos listening to your music?
MS: Akong message kay dako jud nako og pasalamat na hantod karon, at my age, gidawat japon nila ako mga kanta sa mga Cebuano and they still are craving for more.
(My message is my deepest gratitude to all of those who until now listen to my songs throughout the years…)
I: How do you see more of yourself – a Singer or a Songwriter?
MS: Singer-songwriter, comedian ‘gamay’ (laughs)
