• Faith and Believing The Faith of a Child: Sto Niño

Hebrews 11:1-2: Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it. Faith is the reason we remember great people who lived in the past.

It is through faith that we are able to trust someone completely, like a child to his/her parents. Being a mother myself, it is important for us to let our children trust us and put their faith in us when they seem frightened or afraid. It is in that faith that we tighten our bond with our children.

This is exactly how we depict ourselves with our faith in Sto. Niño. This childlike faith allows us to connect and trust the Holy Child Jesus especially in times of turmoil. The Sto. Niño has always been known to be miraculous and stories of His miraculous works circulate throughout the world.

      The Miraculous Holy Child
Going back to its history, the image of the Child Jesus was given to King Humabon and Queen Juana of Cebu during the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Years after Magellan died, another expedition led by Augustinian friar Andres Urdaneta arrived in Cebu. Thought to be retribution on Magellan’s death, a battle broke out and left villages burned. The image of the Holy Child, however, was found under a pile of ashes, totally unscathed. This day was noted as the first miracle of the Holy Child.

      The Sinulog Fiesta
Millions of people want to take a glimpse of this image which now lies in the Basilica del Sto. Niño and every 3rd Sunday of January we celebrate his feast with dance and prayers. As the Feast of Sto. Niño draws nearer, we are reminded of the Cebuanos’ devotion to Sto. Niño. It is in this day when we show the entire world that our faith in the Holy Child is immeasurable. It is this childlike faith of the Cebuanos that enables us to face the future with heads held high amidst the crisis we face as a community and as an individual.

As for me, the Sinulog triggers my childlike faith in Him, and it is not just about religion. It is about being a Cebuano. It is about putting trust in the Child Jesus to guide me in my life’s journey. Like a parent to a child, the Sto. Niño never falters. He is always there when you need Him. He knows what you are going through and He will never let you go through your problems alone. Like a parent to a child, the Sto. Niño gives His heart to you.

As you wave your white handkerchiefs, sing Bato Balani saGugma and dance the Sinulog dance like there’s no tomorrow, remember your faith.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. Yet the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. For the Father seeks such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth.” (*John‬ *4‬:*21-24‬ MEV)

I wonder if there's a difference between "Spirit", "Soul", and "Ghost". Just a thought.
