      PRESS RELEASE

`Geeks On A Beach’ gets DOST backing

THE Philippines’ first-ever “Geeks On A Beach” (GOAB) tech and startup conference scheduled for Sept. 26-27 in the world-famous Boracay Island is now being co-presented by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

This was learned from Tina Amper, founder and president of the organizing TechTalks.ph who said that DOST, through its Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), has since been very supportive of the group’s activities.

“The DOST has always been there for us,” said Amper. “From the first Startup Weekend Cebu to Startup Weekend Cebu 3, the DOST has been a perennial supporter. We owe all of this to Usec Casambre and sir Monchito (Ibrahim).”

Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre is the executive director of DOST-ICTO, whose leadership has moved the agency forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the ICT industry. Monchito Ibrahim is Casambre’s deputy executive director for policies.

“We in the ICTO believe that providing support to technological and entrepreneurial activities like the Startup Weekend and `Geeks On A Beach’ is an effective way to further promote the ICT industry where Filipinos excel,” Casambre said.

Promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the locality, according to Casambre, but also innovative and creative solutions through products and services.

“We never tire in organizing and supporting events where young entrepreneurial-minded Filipinos will learn the rudiments of starting and managing a business through online media and the emergence of highly-sophisticated mobile devices,” Casambre said.

Attending the GOAB will be like going on a holiday as the conference will be held against the splendid natural backdrop that earned for Boracay the distinction as the “world’s best island” by Travel+Leisure.

The GOAB techfest promises to be a valuable and wonderful experience for participants as experts from across the globe will be on hand to share their insights on startups, technology, gaming, mobile apps, and graphic design with the songs of Bob Marley and real Jamaican reggae music in the background.

Doy Vea, chief wireless adviser and founder of Smart Communications (SMART), will be the keynote speaker in the opening of the GOAB Conference.

Topics lined up for discussion are The World Startup Ecosystem: Distinguishing the Asian Experience, The Evolution of Philippine Startup Ecosystem, Fostering and Funding Asian Startups, Startup Best Practices and Philippine Startup Success Stories, Social Media for World Change, World Startup Report: Opportunities and Threats, Strategies of Successful Startups, Attracting Investors, and Investing in Emerging Markets.

The growing list of resource speakers for the event include Bowei Gai of World Startup Report, Jojo Flores of Plug and Play Tech Center, Ron Hose of Innovation Endeavors, Maria Ressa of Rappler.com, Zac Cohn of Liffft, Ralph Wunsch of MetroDeal, Paul Singh of 500 Startups, Stephen Jagger of PayrollHero, Frederic Levy of CashCashPinoy, Earl Valencia of IdeaSpace.ph, Minette Navarette of Kickstart Ventures, Erick Garayblas of Kuyi Mobile, Jia Jih Chai of Airbnb, M. Christina Laskowski of STAC-Silicon Valley, Eric Su of PicLyf, Jay Fajardo of Proudcloud, Steve Cadigan of Cadigan Ventures, and Paco Sandejas of Narra Venture Capital, among many others.

It will also be a great opportunity for startup communities to pitch innovative ideas and create a network of partners, enroute to building new products and launching businesses that would attract investors to the Philippines.
