In less than a week, the music industry has lost three (3) legends. Their passing has left an emotional hollow in the hearts of those who have appreciated their contribution to music and the lives of those who love them.
RIP 1. CHUCK BROWN. Last Wednesday, the “Godfather of Go-Go”, Chuck Brown, died due to multiple organ failures, after being hospitalized due to pneumonia.
For those of you who are too young to know, go-go is a sub-genre of funk, popularized in the late 1970’s in Washington DC. Brown was the guitarist and singer and is known for his “go-go” covers of Jonny Mercer’s “Midnight Sun”, Louis Jordan’s “Run Joe”, Duke Ellington’s It doesn’t mean a Thing if Ain’t Got that Swing” and T-bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.
He was known to have his first cigarette at age 7 and has brought a new art language in music through Go-Go. Dead at 75, he will surely be missed.
RIP 2. DONNA SUMMER. Following a day after Chuck Brown, the Queen of Disco died on May 17, 2012 after she lost her struggle with lung cancer. Five-time grammy winner and legendary singer/songwriter, Donna Summer gained her fame during the disco era (1970’s), and with her mezzo-soprano vocal range, series of number 1 hits like, Hot Stuff, Love to Love you Baby (Aw!), I Feel Love, She Works Hard for the Money, she undoubtedly is the Queen of Disco.
She became the best rock female vocalist for the 1979 hit, Hot Stuff, and recently gained best dance recording for “Carry On” last 1997.
She has kept her sickness quiet, and the movie industry hasn’t seen her as appearing sickly until a few weeks ago, while she was trying to finish a new album. Sources say that Donna Summer believed her lung cancer developed after inhaling toxic particles following the 9-11 Twin Tower attack in New York.
RIP 3. ROBIN GIBB And lastly, today (US time), the popular British family-based band called “The BeeGees” lost its brother and amazing talent, Robin Gibb. The BeeGees (The Brothers Gibb) has been known to be a very important presence in the disco era of the 70’s. And together with his brothers Barry and Maurice, they are among the biggest selling groups of all times with hits spanning six decades and counting like Stayin’ Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever, etc.
After being in a coma, Robin lost his lengthy battle to colon and liver cancer at age 62 and died on May 20, 2012. Robin brought a unique sound to the trip with his high-pitched vibrato singing voice. He was married twice.
Though his brother, Barry Gibb mostly took the role as the frontman of the group, all three are independent and unique in vocals when it comes to performance. Robin has also been a very active writer of their musical hits.

We are one with the rest of the music industry with the unfortunate passing of these three great legends. They may not be with us anymore but their journey lives on. And like the BeeGees have been saying in their top hit, their legacy will be STAYING ALIVE in our hearts through their eternal music.
