3 Interesting Facts/Things to Know About Ayala Center Cebu’s Little Free Library

To further foster a culture for learning and creative expression in its mall, Ayala Center Cebu launched its first Little Free Library (LFL) last October 16 at the Level 4 Garden Area.

A ceremonial placing of books marked the official opening of the LFL. In attendance were Mandaue City Vice Mayor Atty. Carlo Fortuna, Marco Javelosa from the office of Senator Bam Aquino, the chair of Senate Committee on Youth, Ayala Center Cebu Marketing Manager Mikmik Corvera, Stephanie Jarina of Youth for Livable Cebu, and Dave Visaya of Book Swap Cebu. The event also featured an acoustic performance by Wally Allegado of Here’s Wally, a short poetry reading by Dess Balota of Women in Literary Arts Cebu, Inc. (WILA), and arts and crafts activities for kids.

Here are three frequently asked questions about the Little Free Library:

      1. What is the Little Free Library?
The Little Free Library is a global movement to share books and encourage the love of reading. It is a multi-awarded US-based advocacy group that promotes literacy and builds a sense of community that shares skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.

      2. Who can borrow and give books?
The LFL belongs to everyone. Anyone can borrow and give books, and as such, it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain and take care of it.

      3. How does the LFL work?
The LFL works in three steps:
      • Take a book. If you see something you would like to read, take it. Look inside and see who gave it; who else has read it.
      • Share a book. Return to any Little Free Library or pass it on to a friend.
      • Give books. Pay it forward by donating books that other people can read and share.

The Little Free Library program at Ayala Malls received the 2016 Cause-Related Marketing Silver Award Winner by the Asia Pacific International Council of Shopping Centers for enabling diverse partnerships for free book exchanges and promoting the joy of reading and literacy awareness. Ayala Center Cebu is the 9th Ayala Mall to open its own LFL after UP Town Center, Glorietta, Greenbelt, Alabang Town Center, TriNoma, Fairview Terraces, Market! Market! and The District Imus.
