What comes to mind when I hear the term, “summer girls” is the infectious summer anthem popularized by the one-hit-wonder group, LFO back in the late 90’s. In the video, all the summer girls wore skimpy outfits and grooved to the catchy melody of the singing group.
Through the years, “
summer girls” have evolved to different personalities and how they project themselves to the public. Here in the forum, three female iStoryans:
keen, volatile8 and
cranberry, won last month’s thread poll for the month of April. So it’s fitting to dub them as the Summer Girls of iSTORYA – each with unique personalities but they share a common denominator that is they got the total package of beauty, brains and that sunny disposition that simply brighten the (chat)room as they walk in.
For the whole month of April, this spread is solely for these wonderful ladies as they share their personal thoughts and funny quips on things about life, love and just about anything under the sun.
iSTORYA (I):
What’s your basic summer ensemble (clothing/fashion/style)?
keen (K): The usual: shirt, cargo shorts, cap, shades, a pair of sneakers or flip-flops. I'm not into dresses because they tend to hinder movements.
(I):
What is your all-time-soundtrack-of-your-summer?
(K): That Baywatch theme. It always makes me think of: sea, sand and sun.
(I):
Have you experienced a summer fling in the past? (Tell us a bit about it.)
(K): I guess I have, in a way. It was in this certain beach. Great day, robust waves, very sunny. It was the perfect setting. I grabbed the nearest enthusiastic person I could get my hands on and, with as much strength as I could muster, I flung this poor soul out to the summer sea. That's summer fling à la keen.
(I):
Where is your ideal summer vacation destination?
(K): It's something very specific: a mountain resort that's a few minutes away from the beach.
(I):
Describe the last good summer vacation you went on?
(K): It was in a beach somewhere south. Beach day was perfect: lots of tasty and terribly unhealthy food, cases of ice-cold diabetes-causing drinks, and a rowdy, merry crowd. The sun was in a somber mood and didn't show itself much. The clouds were mostly gray and the tide was high. Everyone was shrieking with laughter because every time we tried to venture out to the deeper part of the sea, the big waves kept rolling in and threw us vigorously back to the shore. So, you can just imagine all the hilarious bodily arrangements that we found ourselves in whenever we landed on the shore. It was the subject of amusement and mockery during the days that followed, but we had the time of our lives.
(I):
Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
(K): It's a collective who. Those closest to me are a given, but there were also people I met who have managed to carve their own little spaces in my mental nook and taught me a thing or two about dealing with life, its unique trappings, and all the mad people in it.
(I):
Name a turning point in your life that makes you smile or cry.
(K): I'd just like to cite a recurring point. It's whenever I realize just how dense I can get. It makes me want to smile and cry at the same time.
(I):
What is something that can always make you feel better?
(K): I have this really special and precious collection of songs that were given to me. This compilation grew over the years. Additions to it are very rare, which makes the collection even more valuable. I have treasured it for years and it has done far more than making me feel better. It has kept me on the plus side of things. The thought of this collection, its roots, how it found its way to me, the way it evolved, and its entire story always makes an already good day even better.
(I):
What’s your biggest goal in life right now?
(K): Right now, it would be to finish answering this very distinct set of questions because if I don't, I'd be hounded for a good part of my iStoryan life. Haha kidding. Seriously, there's this project that involves a group of people and long-term plans for betterment. It's been in the offing and it was only very recently that there were clearer indications of it coming to fruition. So, that's where I'm driving towards and, hopefully, there wouldn't be too many roadblocks and stray dogs along the way.
(I):
What do you spend your money on the most and why?
(K): Nothing specific. Just a little of this and some of that... mostly practical stuff.
(I):
Do you shy away from real love?
(K): Generally speaking, even if you wanted to, you can't really shy away from it. Probably because it pulls you and often doesn't take no for an answer, so shying away can make things tougher. Maybe for a certain period of time you go through a roller coaster of emotions and endless questions with no answers, but when it's there, it's there and you will need to face it one way or another.
(I):
What are the top three qualities that you look for when it comes to men?
(K): One, I'm not looking. Two, I'm not looking. Three, I'm not looking. But to go with the flow, humility, tolerance, and reliability are admirable qualities.
(I):
Do You Think Fairy Tales Influence Our Choice Of A Partner?
(K): Fairy tales are just fairy tales for me, just stories that adults decided would be good for children's hyperactive state of mind. I've always wondered about their general overarching theme of "finding true love at first sight" and the ever present "happily ever after, the end" part. I think it creates an idealistic approach. Anyway, I think the choice of a partner is influenced by several factors like your upbringing, the bond that your parents had during your childhood, who you looked up to during your growing years, the list can go on.
(I):
Do You Give Out Second Chances Too Easily?
(K): I can be a giver-outer of chances. Most of the time anyway. And I do not confine that to the male-female relationship alone. Humans err constantly, it's our nature. Another chance is what someone may need to completely change for the better. Some people may label that as being a martyr. But if you really look at it, it's these "martyrs" who have a better understanding of what it is to be human beings and the process that is often necessary for many people to go through in order to comprehend what it is they really want to do with their lives. But that's just my opinion.
(I):
Have You Ever Broken Someone's Heart?
(K): Sometimes you need to choose between being brutally honest and lying to people in their faces. The former will weigh heavy on you because of the hurt you're unintentionally inflicting to the person, but the fact that you are being true and that you don't want to lead people on, that should count. If you don't want to break someone's heart yet you treat them as if they don't deserve the truth, then you're practically shattering their hearts already.
Would You Rather…
(I):
Skinny dip in the ocean in the middle of the night or in a public pool after it was closed?
(K): Swimming in the middle of the night without anything on makes me think of jaws tearing out a completely bare hip while public pools after hours make me imagine bacteria and other people's bodily fluids swimming with you. So, I'd rather do nothing.
(I):
Catch up on reading some good books or catch up on watching old TV shows?
(K): Good books are always welcome. Old TV shows can be sleep-inducing for me.
(I):
Get stung by five bees at once or get a sunburn?
(K): A five-bee sting is likely to bring me to the emergency room. Medical people poking sharp things at me in a room that's rich with antiseptic aroma is not a very summer thought. I'd go with getting a sunburn, specifically until 7 am only.
(I): Be single and have lots of summer flings, or settle down?
(K): I thought the question was going to end with "settle down with a summer fling" hahaha. My answer: settle down. I don't know about that "lots of summer flings" thing. That would definitely break my arm.
(I):
Go to summer school and graduate a year early, or skip the school and enjoy the summer?
(K): Skip summer school and do something sporty like I always did.
(I):
Wear a bikini or a one-piece bathing suit in front of your crush?
(K): Nadda one. He shouldn't be so lucky.
(I):
Have your own pool or have your own hot tub?
(K): Having my own pool would be nice. I'd do laps in the morning and before going to bed.
(I):
Get really tan or stay out of the sun?
(K): As much as I love nature and the outdoors, I prefer staying out of the sun's rays these days. If it were ten years ago, I'd be swimming to my heart's content. But, the sun has grown real harsh, so I'd rather stay where it's safer.
(I):
Sweat all day every day in the sun, or have it rain every day?
(K): Why I would be sweating all day every day in the sun stumps me, and I'm not one for dehydration, so I'd go with: b) rain every day. As long as it doesn't flood me out, I'm cool with it.
(I):
Pee on someone who got stung by a jellyfish, or have someone pee on your jellyfish sting?
(K): Either way, I think a glowing ember works better. And it requires fewer odd movements, to boot.
(I):
What kind of guy would you love to meet this summer?
(K): Let's just say that I've already met the guy I'd love to meet.
