• Pine Trees Sacrificed for Mall Plans

Going to Baguio is an experience one could never forget. In your mind, maybe the following will linger, the smell of the pine trees, the rows of houses amongst the pine trees, the pine houses, the warmth amidst the coldness as you sip hot chocolate in a log cabin surrounded by pine trees. Wait, what was the catch word? Yes, you got that right. PINE.

Come to think of it, what do you associate Baguio anyway? Pine trees. So, it's no wonder that a lot of environmentalists and even citizens are actively voicing out against SM cutting down trees for their mall plans. Reports initially said that with the mall plans, 182 pine trees will be cut down.

Recently, movements have been made such as Save the 182 movement and even eco-peace group, Greenpeace is planning to talk to SM (www.abs-cbnnews.com). Quoted from the news: A member of environmentalist group Greenpeace believes that the 72-hour temporary environmental protection order (TEPO) to stop the SM Group from cutting down trees will give both parties the opportunity to discuss the dispute.

“It will give time for us to ask questions we failed to ask before. Like, ‘What are really your plans? When will you stop? After these 182 trees will you cut some more? It will give us the time to discuss that,” Greenpeace Southeast Asia public outreach campaigner Francis dela Cruz told ANC’s “Primetime” on Tuesday.

Dela Cruz said it will not only give SM the chance to clarify its intentions but it will also benefit members of the Save 182 Movement.

“[The members] are doing a very courageous and noble thing there. What they are trying to protect is not just something for them to enjoy, it is for each and everyone who goes to Baguio to enjoy and that gives us hope,” he said.

In our Facebook page, this was discussed:

SM City has been cutting trees in Baguio for their new mall and the talk now is that it will cut more trees in Tagaytay...Speak up iSTORYAns, be heard and be counted! DENR is paid to play deaf/mute on this issue and clearly, the mall management is doing their evil laughs. Now is the time to stand up for what is right.

Evil in the dark. SM cutting out trees in the dead of the night

So, what can you say about this, iSTORYAns? Speak out and be heard. Mag iSTORYA ta! (Let's talk)

And to think, kani dili maayo.
