• Pine Trees Sacrificed for Mall Plans

Going to Baguio is an experience one could never forget. In your mind, maybe the following will linger, the smell of the pine trees, the rows of houses amongst the pine trees, the pine houses, the warmth amidst the coldness as you sip hot chocolate in a log cabin surrounded by pine trees. Wait, what was the catch word? Yes, you got that right. PINE.

Come to think of it, what do you associate Baguio anyway? Pine trees. So, it's no wonder that a lot of environmentalists and even citizens are actively voicing out against SM cutting down trees for their mall plans. Reports initially said that with the mall plans, 182 pine trees will be cut down.

Recently, movements have been made such as Save the 182 movement and even eco-peace group, Greenpeace is planning to talk to SM (www.abs-cbnnews.com). Quoted from the news: A member of environmentalist group Greenpeace believes that the 72-hour temporary environmental protection order (TEPO) to stop the SM Group from cutting down trees will give both parties the opportunity to discuss the dispute.

“It will give time for us to ask questions we failed to ask before. Like, ‘What are really your plans? When will you stop? After these 182 trees will you cut some more? It will give us the time to discuss that,” Greenpeace Southeast Asia public outreach campaigner Francis dela Cruz told ANC’s “Primetime” on Tuesday.

Dela Cruz said it will not only give SM the chance to clarify its intentions but it will also benefit members of the Save 182 Movement.

“[The members] are doing a very courageous and noble thing there. What they are trying to protect is not just something for them to enjoy, it is for each and everyone who goes to Baguio to enjoy and that gives us hope,” he said.

In our Facebook page, this was discussed:

SM City has been cutting trees in Baguio for their new mall and the talk now is that it will cut more trees in Tagaytay...Speak up iSTORYAns, be heard and be counted! DENR is paid to play deaf/mute on this issue and clearly, the mall management is doing their evil laughs. Now is the time to stand up for what is right.

Evil in the dark. SM cutting out trees in the dead of the night

So, what can you say about this, iSTORYAns? Speak out and be heard. Mag iSTORYA ta! (Let's talk)

Pardon me for saying this but i might sound like a prejudice, hating hypocrite pero this is one thing Filipinos lack in terms of environment: knowledge.
Looking at Cebu alone, mauwaw nako sa mga pro-environment orgs. Philippines just sucks at it, and dapat daghan untang ma educate in the future with regards to this. We're still very naive. but again, we allow investors to take advantage of us man sad. Where else do you think does the money come? i dont think it's purely an investment from the pinoy owners of sm and what not.

They paved paradise and put up a mall.

But if you think about it, 182 trees---relatively small compared to what happened sa uban lugar diri sa pilipinas nga gipamutlan og kahoy.

Cebu is a good example. Kung moagi ka sa SRP, ang bukid nato perting pahaka kay gikahab na.

Murag lalake nga natigulang og naupaw.

        Things like this is inevitable.

Wala sila ka-Notice sa nahitabo sa uban lugar sa Pinas, nga siga nalang lunop Tungod sige putol ug dagkong kahoy! wala sila pakialam sa hitabo! ila lang gi-mind is self interest as long mo-kita sila ug dako sa ila gibuhat ok rana. Ngano Makatabang ba? ang building if naay lunop? Dapat naa sa tawo nagpasi-ugda sa project ilawog sa tirong.

first we think that the owner of that project is not a pinoy blood so whatever happens to our nature her in philippinnes, he/she don't mind this, inspite of this still the goverment mao dako ug sala ana if ever there are more calamities in the future. All we can do is just to pray them that mahayagan unta ang ilang panghunhuna ug dili ang ilang kaugalingon paglambo, hunahuna-on pud unta ang kaayohan sa katawhan.

may nalang ang sm daghan na give back through charity. if sm cuts down pine trees they can have them replanted somewhere else. pero ang uban tao? they use pine trees for some of their houses naman ah. tapos daghan pud residents sa baguio tambak basura kung saan2x. maau lang kung you stick to the tourist spots kay dle ninyo makita ang basura.
you all concentrate on what disadvantages sm brings. e weight pud ang advantages nila, like jobs they bring.
kuyawan mo mag lagot si mother nature? then start with cebu, nagka grabe na biya ang mga baha. do you keep your candy wrappers for proper disposal? do you properly dispose your cigarette butts? ang aso sa inyong sigarilyo? ang mga tambutso sa inyong sakyanan na perti ng ituma? small things that are slowly killing killing "mother nature"
