    Default need advice on 8800gts 640mb (112shaders)

im currently using an evga 8800gt superclocked. im not happy with it because it idles quite hot in my case. 60-65C at 29% and 50-55C at 45% fan speed also i hate the fact that its cooling mechanism doesnt really vent the hot air out of my case. i am limited by my choice in vid cards because my pc case is quite small and aftermarket coolers are out of the question. i was doing some research and discovered that there was an 8800gts that looked exaclty like the older ones but this model has more shader processors (same as the 8800gt) http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...640-P2-N829-A3 .

benchmarks show it does identical to the 8800gt in lower res but better at higher res because of the more memory i think. im considering this card because i know for a fact that it fits my case (other people have the same config, well not exactly, they have the older gts but since its the same dimensions im sure it'l fit). i can avail of evga's step up program and just pay for the price difference of the new card im getting. i really would have wanted to get the 8800gts 512mb but its just too big. the card im considering (8800gts 640mb) uses the older g80core instead of the newer g92, the only reason im thinking of getting it is that it has a dual slot cooler and i know itl fit my case. what do you guys think? should i go for it or not? i mean its not exactly an upgrade because its an older technology. is it worth the temp differences i MAY get? i dont know exactly how the temps will be but im hoping itl run cooler with the bigger fan and better cooling solution. im using a shuttle sff xpc sn27p2 by the way

It should run cooler AND faster, go for the step up upgrade.

How about changing the cooler of your 88GT than buying a new card?

If the cost isnt an issue, you can actually do both.. grab the G92 8800GTS + a Zalman VF1000 it has the same height as the stock cooler BUT will not exhaust hot air out of the case, and would greatly depend on how good the airflow on your case would be.

not to sound arrogant but cost isnt much of an issue here, i checked your suggested cooler but its too big for my case still. the only feasible solution i see so far is the thermaltake duo orb cooler. it looks like it MIGHT fit. problem is, it still wont exhaust hot air out of my case. also im not too excited to change to an aftermarket coooler, i havent done that before and it sounds kinda scary. i dont want to break anything. is it hard to change coolers by yourself? i have no experience in that area

airflow isnt very good on my case, im compensating for it by using one of those pci slot coolers next to my 88gt. it seems like its workn,i see a one or two degree difference with and without the pci slot cooler. not much but im taking anything i can.

that said, what are your thoughts on this duo orb cooler? do you think this will work well on the 8800gts 512 g92? also how good of a card is this 512mb gts

in reference, its made faster than its older version (G80) and the GT, the orb might do the job but still, it wont draw hot air outside your case.

if money isn't an issue here, why not get a better case, so u won't suffer any airflow problems and choose whatever card u want.

also, changing from stock to after market coolers isn't that difficult. just read the manual and basically, common sense.

    @juan_carlos

will the Thermaltake Duo_Orb fit in your SN27P2 case?

If so.. i think that's the best option.

I have the same case and similar videocard (Palit 8800GT non sonic) Would have gone for the sonic version with better heatsink if it wasnt for my single slot limitation.

My temps are way way higher than what you're posting because I like to keep things quiet. I just set the fan to run at its default 29% when idle.. I tried playing around with RivaTuner and got lower temps at the expense of more noise. I'm a cool and quiet guy and I would want my temps to be lower.. pero I think the 8800GT was designed to go up to even 90-100c... sounds really hot compared to my X2 3600+ which runs at the low 20's celsius.. pero if that's part of the hardware's thermal design and... if its quiet, stable and wont cause damage to hardware.. I can live with that. My primary limitation is also that I have a soundcard (M-Audio Revo 5.1) on the PCI slot and would like to keep it there... If I didnt have a soundcard.. I wouldve gotten a 3870 or the 8800GTS G92.. depending on the price also..

The SN27P2 chasis though was designed with dual slot videocards in mind.. That's why the videocard is oriented on the other side compared to other Shuttle models.. You would be best served with an aftermarket cooler or a card that vents the heat out on the second slot.

Personally... with money no object....I'd make use of the step up program and go with the 8800GTS G92 provided it fits your case and your Shuttle's 420W power supply is up to the task. If not... then if you really want your GPU running cool and quiet... better to buy an aftermarket cooler that fits your case. For me.. I think your temps are okay na.. Since the SN27P2 wont be compatible with Phenom...I'd save that money for the upgrade towards a new Intel C2Q (Penryn) PC System running in an Antec Nine Hundred Case and relegate the SN27P2 to mcpc duties...... but that's just me..

Also.. sometimes it helps to just be contented with the situation.. hehe.. but in the end.. Its really up to you.

8800GT is now outfitted with a new cooler...You should get this one.

see the difference...the new one works a lot better. more info at http://en.expreview.com/?p=118

@envy64ht: i dont want to change my case, i love my little shuttle. the size is the reason i bought it.

@vipvip68: i wish i could say for sure that the duoorb will fit but i just dont know. as to your idea about getting the antec, that sounds really tempting, ive been looking at that case for some time now, but i just bought my system and i should use it for a year or two before getting a new one. that would probably be my next case, if i dont see a better shuttle come along

@loloyis.com: thanks very much for that info ive been trying to find out if what i heard about the new v2 8800gt is true, you have just confirmed it for me

i called evga and they told me that the 8800gt is normally a hot running card capable of doing, like vipvip sed 90-100. they said it was designed for this and this should pose no problem. i asked them if i could return the 8800gts if it doesnt fit my case and they said they're not sure since its going to be under the step-up program. considering all these, im just going to take vipvip's advice and make myself contented with the situation. wisest thing ive heard so far. thanks vip i really needed that.
