    Default Western Digital users ( 250GB )

I've been wondering if its normal for the drive to have a very audible shutdown click / noise, by far its the loudest ive heard on any harddrive.

    thats just unnecessary.

I noticed on my samsung 40gb. it ticks when i power it off. but not loud as like its bumping the r/w head too hard... I guess thats normal, the head just returns to its park area.

moreover just enable your SMART feature and do a western digital diagnostics.

Are you also using the WD2500JS ?

Anyway i tried the WD tools and everything is fine, SMART reports a very healthy drive and no where near failing, i guess this sound is normal.

that would reveal the answer... yes its normal to some end product drives. AFAIK there are identical drives pud nga wont make any noise either booting or shutting off..

will give my own feedbacks when i get mine. had to cancel mine because of 1k price drop on the 500GB, probably within a month...
