I've been wondering if its normal for the drive to have a very audible shutdown click / noise, by far its the loudest ive heard on any harddrive.

I noticed on my samsung 40gb. it ticks when i power it off. but not loud as like its bumping the r/w head too hard... I guess thats normal, the head just returns to its park area.
moreover just enable your SMART feature and do a western digital diagnostics.
On my WD 180GB Ide on external enclosure I do here a boot up click, accesing clicks and shutdown click. But on my WD 250Gb sata HDs, there is no sound at all.
Are you also using the WD2500JS ?
Anyway i tried the WD tools and everything is fine, SMART reports a very healthy drive and no where near failing, i guess this sound is normal.
think it's ok ra master EarlZ... my WD has occasional clicking (like Ryan's) but also checked to be ok.
my WD Raptor (10k rpm) runs much cooler than my Seagate (7.2k rpm)...but my Seagate is much more quiet.Originally Posted by dharsam
that would reveal the answer... yes its normal to some end product drives. AFAIK there are identical drives pud nga wont make any noise either booting or shutting off..Originally Posted by EarlZ
