    Default Basic Network Management

Is it enough to use a router's basic allow/disallow access to internet if managing 10-15 workstations? Or is it better to have a third part software to manage the entire network?

If you think its the latter, whats an easy to use and preferably free one?

    Thanks!!

10-15 is ok. Unless you very complicated firewall rules for each PC/user or having hundreds of websites blocked.

About latter (free software+PC), you could install linux and use iptables. Iptables is built-in and configured via console (command line). But there are many GUI front-ends that you could use to configure iptables. Popular distros even provides GUI firewall configurations for iptables.

Another simple software solution is to use a web proxy server. SQUID is able to disallow/allow sites based on contents, ip or domain. SQUID also can run in Windows. If used in linux, iptables can be configured to route web traffic (service 80) through SQUID and act like a transparent proxy. Users will not know they are passing by it. Only when they have 404 or other errors.

BTW, iptables will not filter based on contents. So in linux, transparent SQUID proxy + iptables is the best option.

Is there someone out there who would be willing to consult for us? We need to upgrade and basically modernize our factory slowly and this is one of the areas I need to address.
