for me, its when i do a general cleaning on my cpu. kanang daghan na kaayu abog nga mu affect sa temperature sa processor due to accumulated dust in the heat sink.
i just cleaned my cpu (with zalman cooler) using brush and fresh breathOriginally Posted by vAnzaNt
...ako gi general cleaning so tanan tang tang including coolers...i removed the cpu cooler(cleaned it)............then reapply the thermal paste...........now clean na and running in low temp bisag init sa amo lugar and dili airconditioned...swerti ning mga aircondition ang room coz ok ra di sila palit ug expensive cpu coolers coz ang environment is bugnaw naman, but still much better jud use cpu cooler with copper base ka pas pas mawala ang init.
can you do this? cleaning the cpu with a zalman cooler? hehehehe!Originally Posted by businessminded

at least once in every 3months, thats how often i clean/replaced my thermal paste since heavy user kokung average user ka, pwede na at least once every 6months.
imho, once a year will do. doing it too often might be wasting good thermal compound.
dust cannot enter the space between a heatsink and the processor because theoretically there shouldn't be any gap granted you apply the thermal compound properly. the pressure applied by the heatsink clips also ensure this. the important thing when cleaning is to remove dust that accumulates on the surface of the heatsink as this impairs its cooling ability. cleaning the fan blades will also help. a brush and blower would be great to have for cleaning heatsinks.
now on how often to clean (remove dust) heatsinks, this depends on temps. after cleaning/installing a heatsink, take note of the temperature (proc, gpu, nb, etc.) during idle and when the system is loaded. keep these temps in mind. depending on how dusty your environment is, observe readings after 1, 2, or 3 months. if the temps are still the same as when you cleaned/install the heatsink then you're fine, but if the readings increase by about 2 - 3 degrees, its time to take out your brush...
a simple rule i follow is to re-apply thermal compound everytime i replace/re-mount heatsinks. and just in case you wanted to know, i use the nano-silver compound you can get at cdr king for just php120 (has more or less same performance as as5 but without the curing time, and is much easier to apply).
agree ako sayo, bro. same procedure.Originally Posted by vladmire
