Default Job Hopping: okay o dili?

I know employers don't like it when they see stints in your employment history (6 months sa ABC Company, 1 year sa XYZ Company, self-employed for 7 months, etc.). but if companies these days cannot assure of job security, why do we frown upon people who try NOT to depend on one company?

traditionally, we've been taught to make sure our resumes reflect continuous employment. but do gaps mean unproductivity? what if those were spent on personal development? on trying out new things? on speading one's wings?

these are not rhetorical questions. your views on these please.

^^exactly, employers are not attracted to short employment history no matter how many companies you've worked with..it gives them the idea (perhaps) that you're not worth their investment..

@velvett, it's hard to justify the gaps as spent on personal development unless you have some proof to support that (ex. a certificate of the seminars you attended to further enhance your resume)..

    I see your point.

But I think it isn't the only criteria that the "man is not for the job" just because he/she hopped from one job to the other although I must say it is usually the impression.

Skills set, work ethics, intelligence are just some of the few important things a company puts greater weight when hiring. In addition to that, candidates with a strong history or preponderance to job hopping usually are interviewed and checked on their references and background and even had to undergo certain diagnostic or psychological testing to find out if the person really has problems with keeping his/her job.

So I think it's best for a company to have some kind of rigid testing procedure, interview and assessment to size up whether or not the person should be hired - rather than just look at employment history alone.

Hopping will look bad if the employer might have long term plans for the candidate, because some skills are acquired in time and training/grooming for that position.

You may have good reasons for hopping but most of the time, Interviewers wont take the risk, or they dont have time to fully check why you hopped, so they will just settle for more "stable" candidates.

mu share lang ko sa ako experience..

when i was still in manila, job-hoping / call center hopping is NOT AN ISSUE..
of course, sa call center industry, everyday hiring.. so way paki ang HRs ngadto kung nka 10 nka nga callcenter na gisudlan.. as long as u pass the interviews, exams, training, perform ur job well, ok ra na..
even ang nga bonds, wa epek.. i had an ofismate na ni total na ug 130K ang iya bond, pero wa man japon xa gukda sa mga comapnies na iya giapplyan.. maau man jud nuon xa as an agent.. di xa nahan ma promote coz ang kwarta naa sa agent bcoz of the commissions they're getting..

nka 6 callcenters pod ko in just 1yr 3 months.. if di ko ganahan sa trainer, if di ko ganahan sa schedule, di ko ganahan ug business attire, di ko nahan sa mga officemates nko, di ko ganahan sa account, di ko ganahan sa pay, I QUIT!
wa ko pake.. coz i know, naa jud kay lain na maapplyan.. pero of course sa ako resume, di jud nko ibutang tanan nko nasudlan. mga 2 ra. ana.. ehehe..

pero when i got here sa cebu, halos di ko kasulod ug company coz ang longest nko sa usa ka company is 5 months..hehehe.so they're in doubt of my loyalty and performance.. pero nadala ra man ug storya, na hire man ko and regular nko karon! im with the company now for 1year kapin na.. ehehe..
dinhi nko nakita ang importance sa job.. (char) mao na nag stick ko ani na company..

so bottom line, dili maau ang job hopping.. meaning ana, wa kay goal sa imu life or career..
maypa mag business nalang ka.. u r ur own boss.

Job hopping. Would you prefer to stay in an unhealthy work environment rather that quit just for the sake of not getting a bad reputation in doing a "job hopping"?
