USC vs SWU and ACT vs SIT in opener

Two powerhouse teams will serve as curtain raisers during the opening of the 2nd Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Sunday.

The University of San Carlos takes on the Southwestern University in the first game while ACT makes its debut against Salazar College of Science Institute and Technology in the nightcap.

New talents are expected to emerge during the tournament as organizers allowed participating teams up to 15 players on their rosters. The teams, however, have until today to submit their final lineups.

The participation of the defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos and Don Bosco College will also be known today. It has been reported (not by The Freeman) that USJ-R has withdrawn from the tournament.

Other participants in the tournament are the University of the Visayas, Bohol Institute of Technology, Western Leyte College, Foundation University and ACSAT-Dumaguete.

Only two designated areas in the coliseum will be free to the public while students who will watch the games will enjoy special discount.

VAAA founder Yayoy Alcoseba told The Freeman that he wanted free admission to the public but the management of Cebu Coliseum didn’t agree to his proposal.

The lower box seats cost P30 while ringside seats are for P50. Students who want seats in these areas get 50 percent discount provided they present their school identification card.

Rep. Eduardo Gullas will address the opening ceremony where a “Palabas” featuring five schools is expected to add color and pomp to the event.—Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
