antivirus prevents viruses
anitspyware prevents spyware...

I suggest you use free AVG antivirus and have it updated daily and for spyware and adware, download adaware 2007 and spybots search and destroy both also are free to use.

I don't like AVG free version and I think the pro version also...Try to observe if they found a virus...

AVG Free Edition suits me just fine.. couldn't detect malware though, so I downloaded Spybot for that. I forgot to install AdAware (I heard that Spybot+AdAware = best free solution against spyware).
anyway, AVG Free is a very good free AV program.

not sure of the exact meaning, so here's a quote

it seems the term I needed was Spyware.

because it only detects viruses - a type of malware - hence the name anti-virus.
