    1. Warranty - make sure there's at least 1 year warranty.
    2. Brand - make sure you don't buy those cheap flash drives. Damage due to overheating is the usual problem.
    3. Built - Make sure that the drive is robustly built for everyday use.
    4. Protection - Make sure the connector is well protected when not in use.
    5. Data Integrity and Drive Life - Verify data retention time and the number of multiple erase cycle.
    6. Size - Make sure it's not bulky co'z USB ports usually come in pairs. You won't be able to plug another USB device if your flash drive's blocking the other port.
    7. Optional stuff - key chain, USB extension (very useful for those computer that doesn't have USB ports in the front panel.

-handle your flash drive properly and make sure you stop the device before you unplug it.

    hmm.. ok what else...?

btw, i'm using 1 GB Sandisk mini Cruizer and i'm very satisfied with it.
There's a 512MB Sandisk miniCruizer being sold at SM... Check out Accent Micro.

2 of the 3 TwinMOS flash drives we bought last month is not functioning anymore so be careful with some branded flash drives.

@Junpei: the miniCruizer i mentioned is just an above average performer.. there are other drives that can beat it in terms of transfer rate. but if you're looking for quality flash drive that doesn't break easily, then i recommend scandisk.

to check for transfer rate, you can use this freeware -> http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
my mini cruizer has an average transfer rate of 16MB/sec.

@Ryan: can you pls try the hdtune and check the transfer rate of astone flash drives? i've heard that astone flash drive's really fast! i like their mp3/wma players... do you sell those astone players?

Also one thing to consider when buying USB flash drives.. the DRIVERS.

If you're going to use Win98, or if you have to somehow use your flash drive on a Win98 PC, you may run into hell. I have a 128 MB iVogue USB drive, and I pulled out all my hair when I tried to install the drivers on a win98 machine but finally figured out how to install them after much frustration..
