Comelec en banc, in 4-3 vote, extends SOCE deadline to June 30
MANILA - Citing practical effects, the Commission on Elections en banc voted 4-3 Thursday to extend the deadline for filing the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) to June 30, effectively giving the Liberal Party and several other late filers some relief.
A tweet by BusinessWorld reporter Vince Nonato said those in favor of extension were Commissioners Arthur Lim, Al Parreņo, Sheriff Abas, and Rowena Guanzon.
Against extension were Christian Robert Lim, Luie Tito Guia, and Chairman Andres Bautista.
Comelec Executive Director James Jimenez pointed out that it's not just the Liberal Party that would benefit from the extension.
"The law never intended for the results to be so absurd," Jimenez added. "You have to understand medyo malaki ang maapektuhan ng rule na ito kapag natuloy siya. Titimbangin mo yung evil na gusto mong ma-prevent by forcing them to file a SOCE, versus yung evil na make-create pag hindi nga sila nakapag-file. Paano naman ang boses ng bayan?"
The LP's late filing has triggered a fierce debate over whether the party that ran on "Daang Matuwid" should get special treatment after repeatedly preaching that rules should be followed at all times.
