Mixed martial arts set November 18

COMBAT sports aficionados are in for another treat in 'Only The Strong Survive III' mixed-martial event next week at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

The one-day event on Nov. 18 will feature eight exclusive mixed martial arts bouts.

"This is the first of a kind exclusive mixed martial arts event to be held in the country," Dino Tormes of the Mixed Martial Entertainment Inc. (MMEI), said.

Dennis Tenefrancia, also of MMEI, said the audience can also expect nothing but the ultimate fighters from this side of the country.

The winner of the event will advance to the national championship to join the prestigious Ultimate Reality Combat Championships (URCC) on Jan. 21.
The main event of the night will be between two old enemies Jun Fernandez and Cito Gesta.

The two athletes have openly disliked each other since their first meeting three years ago when Gesta won a controversial kickboxing match. Fernandez had since claimed he was cheated and vowed to avenge his defeat.

Fernandez now heads the Western Kickboxing Club in Talisay City while Gesta owns the Cito Martial Arts Club (CIMAC) in Labogon, Mandaue.

Another highlight of the meet is the first women mixed martial arts bout.

The other bouts pit Paul Reboquio of Western Style Kickboxing vs Jerming Lazo of Arcomjukai; Adamson Torbiso of Durex Dragon vs. Reynaldo Combate of Multi-Style System; Edmond Vergara of Arcomjukai vs. Rene Noblefranca of Yaw-Yan Ardigma; Joerick Rivera of Soma Kickboxing Club vs. Justin Padillo of Espia Camps; Reynante Dioso of Yaw-Yan Ardigma vs. Pablo Santillan of Durex Dragon and Jesse Adbada of C-Mac Bullet vs. Danilo Teves of Espia Camps.
