Lets talk about MCSE / MCSA

Anybody here in Istorya who holds this certification?
I'm planning to move to the corporate side of MS.

I have some questions:

1.) If you have the skills/budget/time would you go for this certification?
2.) What are the advantages of having one?
3.) What are alternatives?

I see that we need to take 6 core exams and 1 elective
a total of 480$ for the exam fee only (80$ each exam)

I have scouted some of the companies that provide training i think they are over pricing imagine 400-500$ training for each exam
thus 6 exams * 500$ = 3,000$ for the training + 480$ = roughly around 3500$ for securing a chance to have this certification.
I hope somebody can share some insights.

yes, you pointed out also the big stone on my path to that certification.
the TIME burns a lot in what i am working now.

you have to pass 4 exams to become a MCSA (3 core exams and 1 elective). focus on those exams first.

advantages? i think most companies will take any MS certified applicant over those who arent. my advise is, dont rely on reviewers. expose yourself to MS OSes. there are tons of downloadable reviewers/leakages (TestKing, ActualTest) but i dont bother with them.

IMHO, MCP certification is just a plus. whats more important is your stock knowledge and experience in setting up and maintaining servers and desktop systems. believe me, when you have those, you can pass any of the MS exams you mentioned.

2.) What are the advantages of having one?

In general, the IT world now recognizes certifications a lot, and I mean big time. Certifications makes you a lot more expensive than the usual. But what's more important is the skills you develop along the way. Whether you're certified or not, skills will really bring you far, though certifications is just a big help that a person is really a "skilled" one, but it's not a guarantee.

To get certified is a big factor in the field of IT. Most companies here in cebu now recognized this certifications and already looking for those certified unlike during 90's. But you also need to have an actual hands on experience to be competitive because if rely on certification without hands on experience you still have difficulty performing your job when you are already there.

think of certification as a license. getting the MCP title means MS is acknowledging your skills in setting up, managing and maintaining MS server and desktop systems. thats +++credibility to you.
