as a PM, during the time of ups and downs, how do you handle your people to keep them always motivated on same goal? one important role of managers is to empower our people. yes, pm served as driver but also think that our people is the engine!

Good view AnonymousPM but we must also remember that the word "pressure" is subjective.

    1. Depending on the nature of industry your company is engaged into. Sometimes the pressure is caused by Market demand.

    2. We sometimes experience unnecessary pressure when we tend to procrastinate our tasks. Come evaluation time, voila! Pressure is at its boiling point.

    3. When we dont work as a team. No clear understanding of the project and no open communication with the stakeholders which is very essential.

    4. When we lack basic knowledge in handling a project to the extent that the project will now be driven by the developers.

And so on and so forth.

Giving them nap time is okay. But exploring through social media is again subjective. Why? Because ideas flows not only through this medium but also through forums, articles, books but most of all, personal consultation with your team is very much helpful. You may have underestimated the capacity of your probinsyanong newbie 😊

And this is fact, even if you block social media in your network, IT guys will find its ways how to tweak to get through it so its never a concern actually.

Lastly, moving out from a company is a personal choice. The company is dedicated to train and develop its people but when one decides to leave, no one will dare to keep and hold him especially if he thinks that the company will close without him. One must remember, we are all dispensable.

Can you clarify the ups and downs? Is it economically? Or project overruns?

I agree, empowering the people is one important task of a manager including Project Managers. All team members must be in congruence to the goal. And so, project team members must be trained and should work as a team to enable them to consider different perspectives but still targeting same goal. No word from a member must be belittled but one must be open-minded too when his idea is not considered because of possible complications.

Totally agree with you bim. There are so many challenges in project management. Things get easier if you know how to choose the lesser evil. We must know the options on how to make our lives easier

TS @cherpada. Economic issues is beyond our control. Im referring to projects roadblocks may it be technical or interpersonal. But mostly technical is not an issue but interpersonal is. And this must be addressed in order that our member can define what the word "TEAM" is.

I don't quite agree with you in this. For me the main reason why an employee leaves the company is relationship with the manager/s. If the relationship with manager is not good then it can lead to many problems. I will not go into details with this, but WE as a PM we should be strong yet flexible in dealing with our people.

All I could say is that my experience as a PM was fun but a bit challenging. In my case, I handled a team consisting of mostly Indians. It's difficult to manage a team labi nag virtual ra and not to mention the language barrier. Most of them are pain in the ass but the good feedback from clients and the success of the project compensates it. It's all about Team work indeed.
