golden rule: if you are on a dedicated video card, do not use generic power supply. ALWAYS use a true-rated power supply.

this will not hold true all the time... discrete GPUs that will suck power from the PCIe slot "only", a generic PSU will do... as long as dili pud power sucker ang CPU na gamiton... like anang mga 125 W or 220 W CPUs... ok ra ning mga generic PSU basta, dili lang overload sila on their DC load... ug, clean pud ang input from the wall...

a GTX 750 Ti (w/out the 6 pin PCIe power connector) will just run fine on a 500 W generic PSU... actual wattage ani nila kay naa ra sa mga 250 ~ 350 W... then ang amperage rating on the +12V rails would be 16 amps...

ang golden rule kay mao ni... if your line from the wall is too noisy, it is a must to install power protection devices... you all know what I mean... walay labot ani ang mga baratohon na electronic AVRs na wla'y gamit... puno2x lang na sila's electricity bill... ehehehe...

daghan generic PSUs na will outlast their "branded" counterparts... nila sa balay sa akoang parents, their last generic PSU runs for almost 10 yrs. gi pa ilisan lang nko kay wla na mo function ang exhaust fan... akoang gipalitan then gi pa ilisan nila'g Huntkey Jumper350 (80+ Bronze) pero, igo ra sya nag 2 yrs+ ang Jumper350 then unstable na ang output nya w/c in turn resulted to an unstable rig... this is just a classic example vs a known brand and a generic PSU in my own personal experience...

by the way, the same ra sila'g DC load (installed HW on the rig)... ang Huntkey diay kay gi ilisan ug generic PSU napud... PSU na dala sa chassis (palit nko sa Gaisano Interpace atbang sa SM 2 yrs ago)... the rig is currently running fine... tua na ni's cousin nko kay akoa man gipahatag did2... sige lang duwa-an ug Dota/Dota 2... current GPU kay Maxsun (Palit) GT 630 1GB DDR3... previous one was Maxsun (Palit) GT 240 512MB DDR3... CPU: E6600 (Pentium Dual Core 3.06 GHz) w/ 4 MB DDR3 ram 1066 MHz, WD caviar blue 160 GB (7200 rpm) and an Asus mobo (limot ko's model)...

basta, depende ra gyud sa DC load or components na gamiton ang PSU... kita na ang mo pili kun unsa ang swak sa budget ug unsa pud ang relax ang atoang utok... kasagaran ani, dako ni'g ma shell out kay patuyang lang ug gasto. overkill ang components or PSU na paliton. this is funny but true...

yes there are systems that can run fine with generic psu's but to be safe lang bai, gamit lang ta ug true rated psu's. we dont want our precious systems go unstable or get fried by generics with dirty power output.

^ to each on each own gyud ta ani bro... based on my experience on this hobby of ours, more than 2 decades na ko ani man gyud... mao ni akoang ma share... ang secret sauce ani kay... "atoang i-tailor gyud tanan"... from the component of choice to peripherals including the protection devices...

im not chossy into PSU... wla pa ko na guba-an ug HW components tungod sa PSU... ang PSU ra ang naguba (katong Huntkey JUmpoer350)... dili man ko pataka'g butang pud ug components... akoa nang i-tailor sa tanan components sa rig ang gamiton nko na PSU. sa tanan nko'ng mga give-away rigs, daghan nila ang naka generic lang... and, so far, as of this writing, wla pa'y na sikawakoy... hehehe...

kun mid end level ang gamiton na components labi na, mid end discrete GPU, kani, i strongly recommend, to use PSUs from known companies para safe & sound ta. then, the same lang gihapon, atoang i-tailor ang PSU sa planned components and again, gamit ta'g protector devices from the mains... a good UPS will do the job nicely... kasagaran nila, naa naman sila surge protection ang power conditioner... check lang sa model capability pud... gamit ni kun bati ang input from the wall...

sa balay sa akoang parents, currently, 4 desktops ang naa did2... puro to sila na naka branded PSUs pero, tulo nila, tabla ra'g efficiency sa generic PSU... 70 ~ 75% efficiency @ 50% load ra on those model from branded companies... so far, kumbate pa tanan...

allow me to disclose this... my Atom D2700MUD here (FreeNAS server) is running @ 24/7 w/ 4 TB HDD (2 x 2 TB) and powered by a generic PSU. gaan ra man kaayo ni na DC load so, kaya ra's 250W generic PSU. tanan rigs nako diri, diretso ra'g plug from the wall including my gaming rig (i5-2550K OC'ed to 4.6 GHZ w/ OCe'd GTX 670 SLI and OC'ed mem modules... powered by a Corsair TX750W)... limpyo kaayo ang input diri from the wall man gud. no need for protection...

and you nailed it on this statement... "we dont want our precious systems go unstable or get fried by generics with dirty power output". and let me add this, dili lang dapat PSU w/ high efficiency rating from branded companies is required for us to be safe and sound but, make sure, you'll add protection devices from the wall para dili na ma sikwakoy ang "expensive" PSU...
