Default BEST CPU in performance per watt

ok i was just wondering if i were to 24/7 NAS/camera recording PC, i am currently concerned about power consumption particularly, performance per watt.

what in your opinion is the best out there? J2900? i3 4XXXT series? celeron?

performance is not the issue here, its peformance per watt.

    No other than the i7-4785T.

Yeah. That cpu has the best performance per watt ratio. For you application though, the i3-4160t should be more suited and more obtainable. Actually there is this 25w xeon, E3-1230L V3 which should be the perfect contender but it is only available to brand-name desktop builders. There is also a 13w version, E3-1220L V3 but is rarer than a free f%&k and already too handicapped.

You should try to look into the Intel NUCs. The U processors they come with have one of the best performance per watt ratios.

nucs dont have the expandability i would require.
i was actually geared towards an i3 at most.
only prob with the nuc is the limited sata ports and no pci expansion.
    basically this machine should have:
2 ethernet ports, i was thinking of putting the cameras on another router while main router will serve the home network
wifi is a plus, but not necessary, at most it will be the backup when a router fails, mag adhoc
minimum 4 sata ports. 1data work hdd, 1 multimedia hdd to house all my porn, 1 camera HDD and 1 OS hdd. thats 4.

end game would be a "hobbyists home automation system" meaning it will on 24/7 extended modified UPS with beep disabled (haron dili masakpan asa ang PC)
pc would be located at a storage attic on probably 2 monitors, one at second floor (maybe a cabinet) and one at attic level. ill just get a longer hdmi cable.

the IP cameras will be mounted on the eaves or kanang exterior ceiling sa atop. cabled towards the camera router. though wifi is a feature with IP cameras, i still prefer cables.
i know this attic is beginning to sound like a nerd cave, but essentially thats what it is.

eventually the whole house will be wired. im looking into USB over ethernet extensions to extend my USB range.

the only motherboard i found that suits me is the gigabyte h97n-wifi. a mini. the asrock Q2900 is a close second. ang dili nako ganahan sa asrock kay ako pay mangita sa wifi module..... and those things are not easy to find

why not ASRock H97M-itx/ac, Z97M-itx/ac and Z97e-itx/ac, i think capable 5-6 sata ports and wifi module is already included.

for desktop mobo w/ 2 Ethernet ports (ATX form factor lang ni sila). then for the wifi, pwede ra USB or PCIe... basin maka uyon ka ani nila... then paresan lang nimo'g i3 "T" variant or a Pentium "T" or Celeron "T" variants...

    Asrock Z77 Professional
    Asrock Z87 Professional
    Asrock Z97 Extreme6
    ASrock Z97 Professional

for your HDD, be sure that you'll use the A/V moidels...

im not sure bout this but does it follow that if the board is smaller it also consumes less power?

Sure do. Also, the better expandability it has, the more power it will consume. The chipset in this case is the biggest factor. Get a board with just the right ports you need. Another thing is the power phases. 4+1 phase should save you a few watts.

You should also save about 4watts going for low voltage rams. I suggest you look for 1.25v Snipers from GSkill.

But the biggest factor of all lies in your choice of power supply. I guess you already know about 80+ ratings. You should get platinum, but not just any platinum psu. Get one with the least power and fanless if possible. I suggest you look into the Seasonic P460FL 460w psu.

Overall, you should save around 40w. In a year, the premiums would have been paid for by the savings if run non-stop.
