DNA samples taken to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation have come back positive.
It was that of Malaysian Terrorist Zuklifli Bin Hir Alias Marwan, who was killed in that encounter in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on January 25.
PNP sources said the DNA sample taken from the finger cut off from Marwan's hand match those of his brother, Rahmat Abdhir.
Rahmat was arrested in San Francisco in 2007 and is detained at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay.
PNP sources said the FBI also congratulated the SAF for the killing.
The other target of the operation, Filipino terrorist Basit Usman, reportedly managed to escape.
Meanwhile, a PNP source said the DNA report merely confirms what PNP has known all along.
The source said they knew it was Marwan who was killed, based on his uniquely-shaped right ear.
The PNP said it had clearer pictures of Marwan showing his face in detail.
The source said facial features may be altered-- but never the ears, which is what forensic experts often use to establish identity.
