THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU) has more than doubled its grant assistance to the Philippines to €325 million (P17 billion) for 2014-2020, channeling “a more than proportional amount” of it to Mindanao as part of the bloc’s contribution to the peace process, an EU official said yesterday.
During signing ceremonies at the Makati Shangri-La hotel of the note for the EU Multi-Annual Indicative Programme 2014-2020, EU Ambassador Guy Ledoux said in his opening speech that the bloc “will more than double our grant to the Philippines to P17 billion from P7 billion for 2007-2013.”
“The significant increase in aid has been granted in the context of the progressive improvement of governance under the current administration,” Mr. Ledoux said.
Under the 2014-2020 blueprint, EU will focus on projects aimed at improving the Philippine’s “rule of law, sustainable energy and job creation,” with a large portion of it “going to Mindanao.”
In his remarks, Rolando G. Tungpalan, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) deputy director-general for Investment Programming, said the increased allocation “is also highly reflective of EU’s continued commitment to support Philippine government efforts to significantly reduce poverty mainly through massive generation of quality employment, sustain gains from governance reform, and to lay the groundwork for a more significant reduction of poverty.”
Asked for specifics, Mr. Ledoux replied: We’re still in the process of formulating specific projects in energy and job opportunities... What’s signed is just a blueprint, a plan where we would like to focus.”
Mr. Tungpalan said NEDA “will review the funding, particularly on how it would be distributed in the form of development projects.”
