Vice-President Jejomar Binay has backed out of a televised debate with Senator Antonio Trillanes over the corruption allegations against him.
In an interview with DZMM, Binay said recent statements by Senator Trillanes portraying himself as an underdog against the Vice -President had led him to reconsider his participation in the debate.
"Ang dahilan po ay dahil sa marami na po akong naririnig. Ako ang mahusay ako ang debater, ako ang abogado. Ayoko naman pong maging... ang pagkakilala ninyo sa akin ay maging mapang-api, mapagsamanatala. Tama na po yon," Binay said.
The Vice-President says his decision is final and will not change even though it was he who challenged the senator to the debate in the first place.
Trillanes: Binay has lost his credibility
Meantime, Trillanes says he was not surprised that the Vice President backed out from the debate.
Trillanes adds, Binay has lost his credibility after backing out from his own challenge. He also says Binay wasted a good opportunity to clear his name from the corruption allegations.
"In a way, I was expecting that. Pero I was hoping against hope that he would somehow have the courage to live up to his word," said Trillanes.
"You just can't expect too much from this guy," he said.
The Senator is also not buying Binay's excuse that the debate will put the vice president in a bad light.
"For somebody like him na gustong gusto bumawi, 'yun ang perfect venue to put me in my place," explained Trillanes.
"It's his loss. He blew up this opportunity. He will be crucified for this and he has destroyed whatever credibility he has left," the senator said.
KBP's reaction
Reacting to this latest development, the Palace says it respects Vice President Binay's decision.
The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas or KBP had been in the thick of preparations for the debate, which would have taken place on the 27th of this month at the Philippine International Convention Center.
"A lot of time and effort was spent on this; people meeting and talking about it, consulting many parties. We are a little disappointed, but we understand that decision," Herman Basbaño, KBP President said.
The Vice-President was also a no-show at a hearing of the main Senate Blue Ribbon Committee last week.
