CEBU -- Five persons died after a father allegedly stabbed his three children and his mother-in-law before killing himself in Catmon, Cebu on Sunday, on his eldest daughter’s birthday.
Catmon police investigators said that Eric Figues, 27, was suspected of being a drug user. With a double-bladed knife, he allegedly stabbed his three children -- Stephanie, 6; John Eric, 4; Erika, 2 -- and his mother-in-law Imelda Molat, 47.
Stephanie was killed shortly after she called her father to join them for lunch in Imelda’s house. It was Stephanie’s birthday.
Based on the police investigation, Eric allegedly killed Stephanie’s siblings first, while they slept in a room in Eric’s house.
As of press time Sunday, PO3 Ben Navales, Catmon police investigator, said the investigators still could not determine how many times each victim was stabbed, because the bodies were still in the morgue.
Eric’s wife was reportedly at work in Lapu-Lapu City when the attack occurred. Police had yet to speak with her as of press time.
Lunch
The attack reportedly happened at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Sitio Manlayag, Barangay Panalipan, Catmon, a mountain barangay of the northern Cebu town.
Police were informed of the incident around 2:30 p.m. when they received a call from Barangay Panalipan captain Marlon Rule. According to Josepher Molat, the suspect’s father-in-law, they told Stephanie to call her father to have lunch around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Minutes later, they heard a loud cry from Eric’s house, which was next door. “Pasayloa ko ma, pa! (Ma, pa, forgive me!)”
Josepher told police investigators that they immediately went to Eric’s house and found it locked. When they forced their way in, Josepher saw his granddaughter Stephanie, the birthday girl, bleeding on the living room floor.
Imelda immediately rushed to get their granddaughter.
When Eric saw her, he allegedly attacked his mother-in-law, stabbing her several times.
Got help
Josepher ran to their neighbors for help.
When he came back along with the barangay tanods and his neighbors, they saw Eric sprawled on the floor. They found John Eric and Erika inside the room. Both pre-schoolers appeared to have several stab wounds.
PO3 Navales said the police believed the suspect might have killed himself. He was a construction worker who arrived back home just last Saturday, after a job in Bohol.
He used to work for a bus company as a fare collector but was fired, reportedly because he frequently panicked inside the bus and kept saying that someone was out to kill him.
Navales said that the man’s neighbors told them that Eric used drugs. This is an angle the police have yet to check further.
