Thread: NAS Box Build

    Default NAS Box Build

Hello mga bros... I'm trying to build NAS box running on FreeNAS. The build I had in mind is in mITX form since I want to use the Fractal Design Node 304 case or the Bitfenix Phenom case. My problem is the motherboard. Can you please help in suggesting the cheapest mITX board that has at least 6 SATA ports? kanang available locally ha.... I'm fine with either AMD or Intel basta at least 6 SATA ports and the cheaper the better...

so i was searching TPC and found this.. Asus E35M1-I. its cheap only 2,500 and has 6 sata ports. my concern is the processor which is built-in. AMD E350, i think similar ni sa intel atom.

adequate rani nga processor for a freenas box? who has experience in running freenas here?

kaya ra kaayo sa E350 ang FreeNas bro... more than enough gyud... even the lowest end Atom CPU, ok ra kaayo... kun daghan mo mag access sa FreeNas server at the same time, ang need lang gyud kay dako ug system mem and FreeNas box then dapat naka Gigabit speed ang line ug ang mga NICs as well as the cables... better, ayaw gamita nang gigamit na NIC na non-intel based chip sa mobo kay hinay na sya mas better ang Intel based NIC chip kay pas2x... mao ni akoang na experience sa akoang FreeNas box diri...

then kun gusto ka mo pas2x pag gyud on multiple user, i configure na sya accordingly to your requirement...

Thank you for your suggestion, i think i will buy that Intel NIC Pro 1000.

FreeNAS will run fine bisan Pentium 4. Pero you would want low power kay usually 24/7 mana. Maybe Brazos AMD or Intel Atom with 2GB RAM and a USB drive for your OS.

pwede ra diay na 2gb RAM? naka basa lage ko nga rule of thumb sa freenas is 1GB per 1TB of storage... my initial will be 4TB storage.

So far sa akong gamit 2GB RAM og 16GB RAM wala difference sa file transfers

mo matter lang na kun daghan na kaayo ang mag access sa FreeNAS box. ako, suway ko'g access ug 6 PCs sa akoang FreeNAS box. nag read and write sila (file transfers)... 8GB mem man sya then G530T and CPU w/ an intel Gigabit NIC... wla ra man difference kun 4GB ang naka taod na ram pud...

don't know kun mas daghan pa ang PC na nag access sa server, basin mo drop ang performance level... wla ra ko mag configure sa FreeNAS box nko ug maayo. tabla ra ni sya'g "plug n' play" for now... igo ra ko nag butang ug 2 x 2 TB HDD, install sa FreeNAS OS on a 4GB USB drive then gamit... wla nko mag RAID 1 sa mga HDD kay gi sayangan ko... naa man back-up on the external drive ang mga important files...

mao sad ako plano is 2 x 2 TB HDD pero RAID 1 (mirror) lang. cge2x thanks sa inyo input i guess dili ra crucial ang size sa memory sa freenas and pure file transfer raman ang purpose nako ani... walay transcoding or streaming movies.

sayop ko bro... in RAID 1 (mirror) diay akoang config before maong gi sayangan ko's isa ka HDD... beh, akoang i-correct akoang statement sa taas...

by the way, before and FreeNAS server ni kumander kay Pentium D 925 w/ 4GB system ram and 2TB HDD (2 x 1 TB) then gi ilisan nako'g Celeron 450 ang CPU to save some electricity cost... ang akoang gi gamit na gigabit NIC nya kay Realtek chip based man, ang transfer speed on the gigabit network kay naa ra sa 40 ~ 70 MB/s. if naka intel gigabit NIC sya, maabot ug 70 ~ 110 MB/s ang transfer speed on a gigabit network... ok ra ko na ang Realtek based NIC ang akoang gigamit kay isa ra ang naka wired connection sa FreeNAS server, ang HTPC lang. ang uban PC, puro man wireless connection sila @ 300 mbps... so, no worries...
