There are other ways for TEACHERS to work abroad without placement or consultation fees.

Despite our best efforts to finish a college degree, some of us still come short of financial stability. I remember way back in college when students shifted to nursing, because the forecast conveyed the employment of nurses abroad in the next 20 years. But because I wanted that "DR" before my name, I proceeded with being a paramedic. As with other graduates of Science High School, the thirst for continuing education was inevitable. On top of that I also wanted to go abroad in search of green pastures. Sadly, there aren't a lot of opportunities for most professional here here. May it be for continuing professional education or a better pay at the end of the day.

After passing the board exams, I decided to take up nursing at the CNU but decided to stop for personal reasons. As a contingency plan, I took up education and passed the LET. After which I applied online and got the job as a teacher in the USA. Among 3000+ applicants in 2009, I was the only one from Vis-Min who qualified. The others were Deans, University Presidents, and other School Administrators from SUCs and HEIs in Luzon. While my former classmates from nursing were still taking up multiple qualifying exams (Nursing Board, CGFNS, IELTS, etc.), I was already on a plane out of the country. While they're paying an outrageous amount for placement fees and consultation fees, all I needed was to qualify.

This is my way giving back to the profession. There are various programs for teachers for employment abroad. VIF is only one of them. This were the steps I went through:

  1. Online Application
  2. Phone Interview with VIF
  3. Personal Interview in Ortigas with VIF
  4. Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar with VIF
  5. Phone Interview with School Principal of a Public School in the US
  6. Work offer given
  7. Chose car and apartment online
  8. Interview at US Embassy
  9. Visa granted
  10. Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar with CFO
  11. USA touchdown
  12. Passed DMV driving exam
  13. Given keys to car and apartment

You only need to be a licensed teacher for at least 2 years and a licensed driver for 2 years in the Philippines. God has been good to me.
