P64T cash found in mall bathroom returned to owner

IT WAS the third time that Iris Melodia, 37, found items inside the comfort room.
“Sa una gadgets ra to, pero karon ra ko kakita og kwarta nga nahabilin (Before I would find gadgets but this time it was money),” she said in an interview yesterday.
Last July 3, Melodia came upon a transparent pouch while cleaning the cubicle inside the comfort room of the customer lounge of the Ayala Center Cebu around 7 p.m.
She could see that it contained cash, passbooks and checks.
She remembered the woman who had just used the comfort room and went out to look for her, but the latter was gone.
“I had no intention of keeping it (the pouch). I’m afraid of doing that,” said the mother of three.

As standard procedure for found items, Melodia turned over the pouch to the information desk of the customer lounge. The pouch was later forwarded to the mall concierge.
Jessa Vyl Montesa, concierge officer-in-charge, said after informing the auditor in the mall’s administration department, they counted the money inside the pouch.
Montesa said the cash totaled P64,747, while the checks amounted to P750,222. There were also two passbooks and some documents.
She said they placed the items inside the vault in case someone would claim them.
The next day, a woman called the customer lounge, looking for the pouch.
Apparently, the owner, who asked not to be named, only discovered her pouch missing that morning.
She tried to give Melodia a “reward,” but Melodia turned it down.
“Wala man ko mag-apas ana. Ang ako lang nanarbaho ko (I wasn’t after the reward. For me, I was just doing my job),” said Melodia, who hails from Catmon but lives in Nivel Hills, Barangay Apas.
Melodia used to be a barangay worker before joining an agency that assigned her to the mall five months ago.
Montesa said management is already aware of Melodia’s deed.
“We are nominating employees who have exemplary performance annually and we will recommend her for that,” Montesa said.
