GRRM is said to be the american Tolkien - Tolkien is the father of classic fantasy and GRRM is the father of contemporary(modern) fantasy. Mra ni cyag mahimog old school vs new... personally gnahan ko ug mrag mix s duha, pero LOTR guro ko pareha nmo TS...

I prefer the original maker of the genre. LOTR is way better than GOT in my opinion. GOT is good but I prefer on the deepness of the content.

Lord of the Rings definitely, Tolkien was the one who started the whole magical/medieval world of elves, wizards and humans coexisting.
