2014 has the most interesting free agency in years?

Miami Heat discussing options to target Carmelo Anthony in free agency | ESPN

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat's immediate focus remains overcoming a 2-1 NBA Finals deficit to the San Antonio Spurs, but discussions have begun within the organization about trying to grow their so-called Big Three into a Big Four, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources told ESPN.com that Heat officials and the team's leading players have already started to explore their options for creating sufficient financial flexibility to make an ambitious run at adding New York Knicks scoring machine Carmelo Anthony this summer in free agency.

The mere concept would require the star trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to all opt out of their current contracts by the end of the month and likely take further salary reductions in new deals that start next season to give Miami the ability to offer Anthony a representative first-year salary. The Heat also are prevented from making any formal contact with Anthony until July 1 and can do so then only if he opts out of the final year of his current contract. Anthony has until June 23 to notify the Knicks of his intentions, according to sources.

With cooperation from their stars and role players Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen, who also possess player options for next season, the Heat could open up in excess of $50 million in cap space this summer and have the most financial flexibility in the league. The only Heat player locked into place for next season is Norris Cole at a salary of $2 million, though Riley will have to contend with a handful of cap holds for pending free agents as well as their upcoming first-round pick in the draft later this month (No. 26 overall).

Kevin Love Hopes To End Up On Winning Team For 14-15 Season

Kevin Love did not confirm that he will opt out of his contract to become a free agent in 2015, but the Minnesota Timberwolves' forward discussed speculation about a potential trade.

"My agent is handling everything at this point ... I'm hoping that everything works out for all parties involved," Love said on Wednesday.

"No matter what the outcome is, I just want to end up in a great place where I can win. At the end of the day, I've played six years, haven't made the playoffs yet, that burns me and hurts my heart, so I really want to be playing."

Flip Saunders said last week that Love "didn't have a right" to be frustrated.

"Flip's a great guy," Love said. "He was great for us last year when [Rick] Adelman was the coach, bringing us all together. It was his first time back with the team, and now he's taking over the coaching reins, and I congratulated him, talking with him, back and forth, and when he says something like that, same as when Ricky talked about me being a leader, I just continue to work hard, keep on the grind, and use some of it as fuel ... but what they said, it holds true, some of it."

The New York Knicks are believed to be interested in Love.

"I think any time you have Phil Jackson involved in any organization, you're going to definitely look at it and it's definitely intriguing," Love said. "The Knicks are definitely a place where anybody would like to go."

When asked whether he can be the best player on a championship team, Love said, "I think so."

Cavs reach out to Mark Jackson about head-coaching job, according to sources - ESPN

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached out to Mark Jackson about their head-coaching job, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking.

Cavs general manager David Griffin telephoned Jackson several days ago and the two spoke, but no formal interview has been scheduled and it is unclear how serious the Cavs' interest in Jackson is, sources said.

The Cavaliers also are plan to interview former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt next week, The Associated Press reported. Blatt, who has known Griffin for years, announced Thursday that he's leaving the European champion to pursue an unspecified job in the NBA. Blatt, 55, has drawn interest as an assistant coach for the Knicks, Warriors and Timberwolves as well.
