Java applets are generally designed to do work autonomously (ie, w/o user
interaction). Such uses can be, for example, a live news feed, stock ticker,
    online messaging system, etc.

JavaScript is generally used to capture user actions (ie, clicking,
mouseover, keystrokes) and report them to the browser for action required.
For example, you most often use JavaScript to create rollovers in images.
You may also use JavaScript to show/hide portions of your site or to change
your site layout to better fit a users screen (like Project Seven's
    auto-column adjuster).

So depends what are you plan to do with your website later on, if you intend to do both
User Interaction and Non-Interactive(server side) pages then you should learn both.

buhi pa d ay ang applets? dugaya na ani na technology oi and wala ka abot sa iya full potential, nalupigan pa man gani ni cya sa activex na mga plugins. 10 years plus na kaayu ni na technology (i mean ang applet), i still remember doing a game using applets back then hahaha

and for this and current generation,
with the advent of HTML5, the full power of javacsript is on its full potential.
