Both are dirt cheap these days. Get both and you can't go wrong. PS2 for it's gaming library, while the Xbox is great for modifying.

i would choose ps2. still has support from manufacturer and probably still supported for the next 5 years. games still coming out. free online gaming if your game supports it. xbox has none of those features.
