Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte told the Senate hearing the rice smuggling investigation today, Feb. 3, that he "will gladly kill" Davidson Bangayan, a.k.a. David Tan, the alleged rice smuggler, if he smuggles rice in his city.
In a televised Senate agriculture committee hearing, Duterte said he doesn't mind if he will be imprisoned for killing the controversial trader.
"If this guy (Bangayan) would go to Davao and start to unload, I will gladly kill him. I will not hesitate. I will do it for my country," Duterte said.
However, Duterte said rice smuggling is impossible to happen in Davao unless the trader has "connivance" with Customs and the National Food Authority (NFA).
Duterte said the country does not need more laws but more good men. He added that smuggling cannot be prevented due to "negligence, money and it is already a lucrative practice."
"The trouble with us in government is that we talk too much, act too slow, and do too little," Duterte said.
Duterte also insisted that Bangayan is the person in the photo provided by the intelligence community. He also called Bangayan as the central figure in rice smuggling in the Philippines.
