Exclamation Lenovo acquires Motorola Mobility from Google for $3 billion

Google announced that it has reached an agreement to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. The Chinese electronics giant will pay approximately $2.91 billion for the smartphones business with $1.41 billion due at the deal’s closing in cash and ordinary shares, and the remaining $1.5 billion as a three-year promissory note.

As part of the deal, Google will retain the bulk of Motorola’s massive patent portfolio, including current applications and invention disclosures. Lenovo will acquire about 2,000 patents alongside the Motorola Mobility brand and its trademarks. The Chinese company will receive a license for the remainder of Motorola’s portfolio which will remain at Mountain View.
After acquiring Motorola for $12.5 billion in 2012, Google raised the company’s profile last year with the launch of the characterful Moto X and Moto G duo of smartphones. Despite its efforts however, Motorola Mobility continued losing money each quarter.
Motorola’s acquisition will give Lenovo a much needed presence on the lucrative smartphone market in the United States (Motorola is currently number 3 smartphone manufactuer in the United States). It will also help the company counter the slumping sales of personal computers by expanding its focus on mobile devices.
Furthermore, the deal marks the acquisition of another legendary American technology brand by Lenovo. Back in 2005, the company bought the venerable ThinkPad division from IBM.
The transaction between the two companies is subject to regulatory approvals in both the United States and China.

so sad to hear this news. And I bet most Americans are saddened to hear it as well. Knowing that Motorola would be a subsidiary of Lenovo which is partly owned by the Chinese Government, they cannot be too complacent in thinking what the Chinese Government might do once they bought one.
Motorola was and is always a U.S. company, and it's disheartening to hear Google sold this out to Lenovo. Though Lenovo has some great phones up on their sleeves but personally, I would rather go buy a branded and tested Motorola phone over a just recently phone manufacturer like Lenovo who just a recently entered on the smartphone market arena.

Google as I've heard also, would be dishing out the NEXUS Family lineup and hence the LG Nexus 5 is their last Nexus brand (on an all Android pure experience), I heard, they're going to replace it with the Google Play Edition family. So hence, any phone manufacturer can develop from now on a Google Play Edition, and there would be no more 'Google' Pure android phone.

I heard Google's stocks have dipped down upon the Motorola acquisition by Chinese owned Lenovo.

Why saddened? I believe all companies started mediocre. Even you yourself started somewhere unless you are from outer space.

I got to test the lenovo p770 worldwide with different sims on sim 2 and a roaming smart sim on sim 1, as my travel(work) goes anywhere and fascinatingly, it performed just the same as my "branded" phone.

I am rather interested, than saddened, to see this company expand for they make or distribute reasonably priced phones to compete with these price renowned companies.

I also have the Razr xt925 which id be glad to have it supported by lenovo instead coz motorola support here in the Ph sucks!

It's good to see that google will still own patents from Motorolla.

“As part of Lenovo, Motorola Mobility will have a rapid path to achieving our goal of reaching the next 100 million people with the mobile Internet. With the recent launches of Moto X and Moto G, we have tremendous momentum right now and Lenovo’s hardware expertise and global reach will only help to accelerate this,” said Dennis Woodside, CEO, Motorola Mobility.

yeah technically, though it remains to be seen lang pud. I think that was the intent of the Google and Samsung patent agreement that they've signed just recently, requiring Samsung not to load most crap and bloatwares on their galaxy phones.

The Nexus lineup has been one of the best that Google had form w/ their partnership w/ Samsung and later on with LG. It's just sad to note that since the Nexus lineup would be scrapped from now on, and replace w/ OEM google play edition lineups, Google has too many stewards to maintain already... e.g. HTC's Google play eds, Samsungs', LGs and etc..

    Going back.

For me, this acquisition is to Lenovo's advantage jud. Not much on Google's part.

Google declares itself satisfied with the reception of chromecast and Nexus devices.

"Google’s praise of the Nexus line could be an attempt to pour water on*speculation that the company would kill it starting with 2015, sparked by Eldar Murtazin’s claim that Google would axe the Nexus as a concession to Samsung. Then again, the non-committing language used by Google’s executives leaves plenty of room for interpretation."

Is the Nexus line really dying? There's still hope for Nexus - lovers out there. Read the article in the link above.

    Pretty bold statement there.
