Usual family tradition during New Year/Lunar New Year:

All members of the family must be present.
    Red lanterns are prepared.
All rooms in the house must be cleaned.
All windows and doors must be opened.
Place coins on all window sills and slip them under all doors/floor mats too.
Hang grapes on all windows and doors.
Papa will light the incense and we all pray.
At exactly 12:00 am, one member of the family will roll a bag of Kiat (commonly known as Kiat-kiat) on the living room floor.
Before the salo-salo, every member of the family must wash their hands with pure lemon juice prepared in a bowl instead of washing with water.
The 'usual' food are prepared: Nian gao (tikoy), spring rolls, fish, oranges, pomelo etc.

And the last rule that I don't like much:

No one is allowed to go out of the house and spend even a single cent. Everything must be bought before or after New year.
