A near-collision between a United States guided missile warship and a Chinese military ship brought tensions to the region being claimed by China. The guided missile warship USS Cowpens was sent a hailing warning and ordered to stop by a Chinese Navy ship but refused to heed the warning and continued on its course because it is operating on international waters. The US warship was forced to suddenly change course when a Chinese tank landing ship sailed in front of the USS Cowpens and stopped, almost causing a collision.US military officials said the Chinese ship veered away from other Chinese navy vessels including the carrier Liaoning and approached the USS Cowpens. The US warship sent radio signals to the Chinese ship that it was getting too close, but it did not stop. The Cowpens commanding officer ordered an “all stop” when the Chinese vessel came within less than 500 yards off its bow. The Cowpens, then, took a dangerous maneuver to avoid a collision.According to US officials, the incident happened when the Cowpens was exercising its freedom of navigation about a week ago. The US warship was just conducting a routine operation in international waters.
However, Chinese military officials might have construed the US warship’s routine operation as conducting surveillance on its only air craft carrier Liaoning. The US government used its diplomatic and military means to protest the incident. The Chinese embassy in Washington has yet to comment.A senior adviser for the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, Patrick Cronin, said it is getting dangerous out there. Cronin said the incident at sea could be the Chinese retaliation to the United States’ refusal to recognize China’s newly declared air defense identification zone (ADIZ).“We’re making them look impotent with respect to the ADIZ,” said Cronin.Last month, two US B-52 bombers flew over China’s newly established ADIZ in a clear defiance of China’s order requiring all aircraft passing the demarcated area to register first their flight plans to Chinese authorities. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, called China’s ADIZ destabilizing and heightened the risk of a military miscalculation.US Vice President Joe Biden, during a recent visit to Beijing, told Chinese Xi Jinping the US has deep concerns over the ADIZ and that Washington did not recognize it.The region in question is the uninhabited Senkaku Islands located south of Okinawa, Japan. It is believed to contain massive reserves of natural gas and oil.
