The GOP does not know (or maybe they don't want the American public to know) that the deficit is shrinking since the 2008 financial crisis. They want the public to panic and discredit Obama, when the budget has actually been stabilized. It is stupid to think defaulting on debt is going to produce anything good at this point, when in fact it would create a 2008 redux. The only way out is to stick to current financial commitments and avoid making any new fiscal commitments. This is why the GOP is no longer Grand, just old. Now we'll have this shutdown that will only do bad for the economy--because of childish politicians.

GOP had no problems with George Bush running up deficits from the twin wars he waged and creating the housing bubble with his Homeownership Challenge (by pushing for affordable tax incentives and getting Freddie and Fannie to pursue reckless low-income lending). Since Obama took office, they've resisted every move to fix (or mitigate the damage from) what was broken during the Bush administration. They just don't like having a black guy with a Hussein middle name calling the shots.
