Default The Technical Side of Filmmaking...

I have limited knowledge in filmmaking but I am willing to stretch myself.

Anyone here wanna to talk about specifics. Based on experience kind of thing? Preferably technical coz it's what most Filipino movies lack finesse.

Let's share directing, editing, cinematography, etc...

To start with, what's your basis of visual story telling? Do you use motivated lighting?

Do you have a checklist when location scouting? What do you take note of?

My checklist includes:

Permits?
Contact persons?
Ambiant sound?
Available power?
Traffic?
Room for movement?

Ambiant sound?
Available power?
Are you Mr. Andrew Durbin from IAFT?

Sound yes. It does get annoying when you have to re-do a take because a truck passed by or a parade has rudely interrupted you.

If the filmmaker uses artificial lights, then I suppose we need electricity to shoot, unless you use natural lighting and just batteries for your camera then maybe we can afford to be a little Amish in filmmaking.

Let's share directing, editing, cinematography, etc...
Directing. I don't believe in demonstrating. Although I was close to doing it once either because I failed to direct properly or my actor wasn't the one worth my time.

Editing. I believe one is a master of rhythmic editing if he can use purely straight cuts without any transitions. Although he may use "graphic match" or a sound bridge for the scene change to not be so abrupt.

Does that make elliptical editing a 5th dimension in the 4 dimensions of movie editing?

OT: angryliar: where in mindanao are you from?

back to topic:

I agree with your checklist in scouting for location.

I also check the traffic of people coming in an out of the location and most convinient time to shoot.

I'm from Misamis Occidental. I regularly come to Cebu for our family business. I'm new to filmmaking and I consider myself a serious hobbyist. My skill level is amateur to advance depending on which aspect of production.

I have experienced productions (in different capacities and levels) in Luzon and Mindanao doing AVPs, low budget commercials, infomercials and documentaries (mostly for NGO's trying to raise funds).

I'm so fortunate to have been exposed to different production tools (which I don't own) and I'm adept in using them.

Cameras, Sony TRV950, VX2000/2100, PD150/170,
Canon GL2, XL1 and XL2 with or without the 35mm Adapter,
and Panasonic DVX100A.

Audio, Mixer-ShureFP33 & PSCM3,
Shotgun mics -Sennheiser M66 & MKH416, Neumann KMR81i, Sanken CS-1
Lapels - TramTR50, Sanken COS11, Sony ECM77, using either Lectrosonic, Sony and Audio-technica transciever systems.

Video Software, Premiere, Vegas and FinalCutPro. I've tried After Effects and Motion but I'm not good with it yet.

Audio Software, I've used several but I'm more confident now with ProTools.

Some of these tools I know by heart while for others I'm at a comfortable level.

With this post, I could be misinterpreted by some but I don't mind. I only want to share my background with hope that I would be of help to the Cebuano filmmaking community (in whatever capacity).

And MrBiddle, I am not Andrew Durbin from IAFT.

Though I have been to IAFT to check there facility and program for the summer. Though not everything is impressive still I was interested and would have loaned money hadn't my work prevented me from getting the training.

I believe in going to school because all of the directors I admired went to film school.

Best Regards...

Getting technical again:

ON DEALING WITH SOUND

Audio has always been the missing link in Filipino films. Worse is with indie productions as we thought that once we have a camera we are ready for productions.

Let us remember that this is an audio-visual medium (note audio comes first). While most people who want to get into filmmaking tend to go for directing, cinematography or editing less and less want to hold the boom during production.

In an effort to give importance to audio, let's share experience.

In our production, the Room Tone or Ambiant sound is recorded before every shooting starts in every location as an SOP. We take 30 seconds to a minute.

We do foley on location during breaks for we feel it to be more authentic. We use a combined lapel and shotgun miking setup.

Dialogues are recorded live. Although at times we have done ADR (but not on a booth just in a 3ft X 3ft box with pads using dynamic mics recorded on a camera).

Please share how you do things. Let's learn from each other.

A list of tools you use will help us assess your situation. We have made some tools for our low budget productions maybe we can share info.

Best regards...

angryliar: IMHO, we cetainly could use your knowledge in production.

In our productions, all dialogues are recorded live. either using on-cam mics or shotgun mics. ambient sound is also recorded from 30secs to 1 minute, however, this has yet to be a habit.

foleys are not recorded.

you sound so familiar....you remind me of one person who always lectures me about motivated lighting.

walay SOUND!!! sus! dub ra puro ako! tanaw btaw mo ug MEteor Garden, wa naman gani nag ka tung2x ilang voices, RATINGS galore kaayo!!

The last time I shot, I had about a 5 second "buzz track" that I salvaged from an audio sample (recorded unintentionally), I looped it and used it as ambiant sound.
This is supposed to be about 30 secs or one minute and I was barely able to loop it. My bad.

I have no clue as to how to do Automated Dialogue Replacement. And it would be a living hell if it is called for and I don't have the equipment, knowledge or schedule for a re-shoot if my dialogue was recorded live.

Speaking of dubbing, I know of DV filmmakers who still use the D.A.T recorder and the clapper is still present. Is this so they can film far, far away from the actors and have it synced later on? Or do they just want to have the fun of clapping the slate?
