SOME 32 jeepney drivers whose routes are plying in Cebu City were issued bench warrants by the court for their traffic violations.
This led the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) to form a group to look and go after these erring drivers who have an aggregate traffic fine amounting to P1,629,400.
The group is composed of traffic enforcers and members of the traffic police.
In an interview yesterday, Citom’s operation division head Joy Tumulak said the court’s issuance of a bench warrant would serve as a warning to the jeepney drivers to obey City Ordinance 801 or the Traffic Code of Cebu City and other traffic laws.
The bench warrant to the 32 jeepney drivers was issued by Judge Monalila Tecson of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 1 last month.
Absence
A bench warrant is issued when an accused does not appear during a scheduled court
proceeding.
Tumulak also told the jeepney drivers to immediately settle all their fines every time they are issued citation tickets by Citom’s traffic enforcers.
Of the 32 jeepney drivers, Tumulak said there is one of them who has a traffic fine that has already reached P139,800 after committing 350 violations since 1999.
Another jeepney driver, owes Citom P160,500 for committing a total of 335 traffic violations.
Violations
Tumulak said majority of the violations committed by the jeepney drivers are stopping at no stopping zones, disregard of traffic signs and the failure to carry their identification cards.
At around 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday, Tumulak said Citom has apprehended one of the 32 erring drivers while he was waiting for passengers in Barangay Bulacao.
He was identified by the traffic enforcer through the jeepney’s plate number.
The said driver, who is a resident of Naga, has committed 222 traffic violations and has a total traffic fine of P89,000.
Tumulak said the driver is at the custody of Citom. He will be brought today to the sala of Tecson.
“Depende na dayon sa judge kung iya bang i-allow ang driver nga mo-pay ug compromise penalty or ipa-pay gyud ang fine in full (It depends on the judge if he allows the driver to pay a compromise penalty or pay the fine in full),” he said.
