FORMER Toledo City vice mayor Ricardo Rafols Jr., who got elected councilor last May 13, died last Thursday at the Makati Medical Center.
Lim Tayuma, a friend of Rafols’ family, said the 61-year-old official was suffering from leukemia and had been confined at the hospital since December.
Rafols was serving a life sentence at the New Bilibid Prison after being found guilty of malversation of public property, which included kitchen utensils that were in his custody as vice mayor of Toledo City in 2001. He was arrested on Aug. 8, 2012 as ordered by the Sandiganbayan.
Rafols, an ally of Toledo City Mayor John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña, got more than 16,000 votes and ranked third in the council race.
His family and friends campaigned for him.
“I am saddened by the sudden demise of Councilor Rafols,” Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III yesterday said in a text message to Sun.Star Cebu. “Although he ran and won as an independent candidate, he supported us.”
Rafols was the vice mayor of then mayor Aurelio Espinosa. During the May 2001 elections, he ran against Espinosa’s daughter, Arlene Espinosa-Zambo, and lost.
In her first term, Zambo ordered an inventory on City-owned properties and found that P200,000 worth of property under Rafols’ custody have not been accounted for.
Rafols’ remains will brought to his home in Barangay Tubod, Toledo City.
