Two Young Undefeated Champions battle it out for a Title Unification Match at 154lbs Jr. Middleweight Championship and for the Vacant Ring Magazine Championship.
This Saturday night WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) will be facing each other at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
In today's boxing landscape, few fighters are as hot as Canelo Alvarez. The undefeated 22 year old is already being talked about as the next major superstar, the future of boxing, and a possible opponent for pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather. He had a breakout year in 2012, first demolishing Shane Mosley and sending him into (temporary) retirement, then knocking out Josesito Lopez in a high profile headlining fight. After the Lopez fight, there were a lot of possibilities for Canelo's next opponent as there's a sense that this fight could be the one to really make him.
If so, he certainly hasn't made it easy for himself. Austin Trout may not have quite the acclaim of Canelo at the moment, but he's one of the toughest fights out there. Trout is coming off of hands down the biggest win of his career, as last December he defeated Miguel Cotto in Madison Square Garden, ending Cotto's undefeated MSG run. The talk may be all about Canelo's future, but if he looks past this weekend, Trout has all the skills needed to spoil those plans.
It should be a fantastic, action-packed fight - just another stop in an incredible few months for boxing.
Opening the broadcast will be a battle between two young undefeated fighters as 23 year old Omar Figueroa faces 25 year old Abner Cotto.
Stoked for this fight!
