The LTO website defaced on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013.
MANILA, Philippines — The official website of the Land Transportation Office (
ww.lto.gov.ph) was defaced on Easter Sunday by hackers who claim to originate from the Middle East.
The LTO, which already encountered several cyber hacks on its website in the past, is a government agency under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).
On Sunday, hackers defaced the website by replacing it with a graphic of what appears to be a hooded person using a laptop over a dark background. Text messages saying “HaCked by BIn LaDen HaCker” and “Saudi Arabia Hacker” were also posted, including a couple of email addresses, a personal identification number (PIN), and code names, presumably, of the hackers involved in the defacement.
In addition, a
link provided on the page will lead users to a site archiving the hacker group’s list of websites they apparently defaced.
However, no other details or reason for the LTO website defacement were given.
Several Philippine government websites have been target of cyber attacks by different hacking groups for a number of months now, prompting the Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to implement an
initiative to host all government websites under the agency’s control, both for security and standardization reasons.
