yep, it was a pagan symbol to communicate to the divine beings...
naa pud ni siya sa ST.Peter's Basilica sa Rome and Yes ni exist na pud ni siya before Christianity so pagan symbol pud ni niya
from egypt ngadto sa Rome in honor of the sun
but later adapted by Christianity as symbol of humanity reaching out to God or Christ on the matter.
the obelisk in St.Peter's Basilica also served as a silent witness of St. Peter's martyrdom and so as many other Chrsitian martyrs.

does this mean nga the Catholic Church practices pagan worship?
if so, so does many Filipinos sepcially in the tagalog region who addresses God as "Bathala" 'cause the term Bathala was orignially
used by the katutubos to call God who were pagans in their time.

so the answer should be no, pertaining to how the link you posted suggests bai.

Obelisks are phallic (p3ni$) symbols related to the Egyptian Sun god, Ra. The 4 sides of the Washington Monument are aligned with the cardinal directions (i.e., east, west, north, and south). At the ground level each side of the monument measures 55.5 feet long, which is equal to 666 inches. The height of the obelisk is 555.5 feet, which is equal to 6,666 inches.
