Samsung Galaxy Grand was released last month and i got the very first unit to land here as my primary phone until today when the Lenovo ideaphone P770 arrived.
Even though it's only been a few hours with the P770, i think this is a clear winner in the jellybean dual sim arena! Let me share with you my out of the box experience/opinion.
Size. the P770 just feels right in my hands. the Grand is just a tad too wide for one hand operation. I think Note users will disagree with me, however coming from a P700i 4inch unit, handling the Grand was a lot of getting used to and i had to manage so i can enjoy some jellybean goodies. moving to the P770 4.5inch unit was a big relief. honestly the thickness (11.9mm) nor the weight of 161g doesn't bother me at all.
Battery on the Lenovo is 3,500mah. Largest capacity on any mobile phone today i believe. 29 hours talk time. 12 days standby. this should last me more than a full day of very heavy use. Plus, you can also connect other devices to the P770 with the included adapter to charge them! yes, i manage to charge my iphone using the P770 as source!
Sim Management. Lenovo provides more options and flexibility. Assigning network colors to the sim makes it easy to remember/identify. Blue for Globe, Green for Smart and Yellow for Sun. Assign a primary sim to make outgoing calls or a primary sim to send all text is easy which allows you to use 3rd party apps that doesn't support dual sim to send via the sim you want. In the Galaxy Grand im force to put that sim on sim1. this is a problem with the Grand in case you use sim1 with DATA SIM only relying on sim2 for calls and text. remember on these phones only sim1 has 3G capability.
Mass Storage compatibility. Grand doesn't even have it. only media and camera protocols means no preview in windows explorer and very limited options. and it's just so much faster transferring data on the Lenovo.
Price. 16,990 vs 11,999. every centavo counts! the savings you keep with the purchase of the P770 lets you buy plenty of accessories later on. portable speakers. casings. bluetooth earphone. 32gb memory card. etc. 5k savings, thats a lot! you can even buy 5 or 6 dumbphones with that kind of money.
Preloaded apps. the lenovo has plenty to offer this time around. facebook and skype are preinstalled which you can setup during first startup. Chrome is present as well as the default android browser. Office app & Lenovo Note and a slew of smaller apps like accuweather & flashlight app are all ready for use out of the box. Though honestly i would consider some of these apps as bloatware like CamCard & Cam Scanner, SugarSync and UC browser. 980mb ram advantage over the 804mb on the grand doesnt seem much anymore until i realized these bloatware can easily be uninstalled right from the apps settings. unlike the Grand's bloatware where you can only disable the app, not remove them!
but its the little things that make the P770 a true winner. Vibrate upon pickup on the other line. Minute reminder. T9 dialer allows first and last name combination and displays multiple names right away. When you dial out it shows on screen which network your using to make that call. Smart Sound noise cancellation improves voice quality (yes it has extra mic for that).
there is only one advantage the Grand has that i truly wish the P770 has...a built in magnetometer. too bad the specs post online regarding the P770 having one are false.
btw, does anyone one really use the dual screen mode on the Grand/Note2? for me, it was nice bragging about it but as far as actual usage, never found the need.
anyways thats it for now...time to upgrade the firmware to S109_130118, i'll update this post soon.
