Judas Priest gay metalhead Rob Halford on Angel of Retribution, metal and sexuality
halford Rob Halford, the frontman for heavy metal's Judas Priest, is proud that he'll be remembered as the first metalhead to come out of the closet. During an MTV interview in the mid-1990s, Halford made the announcement without any fanfare and he has never regretted it. He also claims it did little to alienate his fans. That's why he's urging other heavy metal rockers to follow his example.
"A lot of cool things happened because of it. I've had feedback from a lot of people, particularly teenagers who were going through tremendous hardships with family and at school. I know when I was 12 or 13 I was thinking, 'Oh God, I'm a freak, I'm gonna burn in hell,' and all that crap - and it's a horrible experience to live through if you don't have support. But looking at the bigger picture, I'm not the only metal homo. There are many more statistically speaking."
Halford has returned to the Judas Priest line-up and the new album, "Angel of Retribution," hits stores March 1st. Halford told Revolver Magazine, "We're not a political band by any means, but the title is also partially a reflection on today's state of the world. There's so much retribution going on, whether it's Enron or accounting scandals or the Roman Catholic Church. People are finally being held accountable for their actions." He also said that Judas Priest will never be a nostalgia band. "That's part of our longevity. We've never rested on our laurels."
A power ballad on the album, "Worth Fighting For," pays tribute to a dysfunctional relationship and Revolver asked if the band were to shoot a video if Judas Priest would make the relationship male/female? Halford told them, "If it was up to me, I would do a boy/boy relationship ... because I'm a homosexual. So there's a debate. Maybe we should do a bunch of videos. We should do boy/girl, boy/boy, girl/girl, transgender/transgender, black/white, Roman Catholic/Jew, Protestant/Quaker. That would cover all the bases. [Sighs] I don't know. Maybe we best stay the normal course of events, and out a man and a woman together. But I see Herb Ritts all over it, and that's gonna cost an arm and a leg."
