New Sony SmartWatch with Android to launch this week?

Sony looks set to unveil a new slimmer, more powerful Sony SmartWatch this week at the Mobile Asia Expo. The company's official Twitter account has been tweeting hints and even posting design renders of the next-generation SmartWatch.

With interest in wearable tech now at an all-time high it was expected that Apple would be launching their own iWatch this year however Sony appears to have beaten them to it with an updated version of their original SmartWatch for Android set to launch this week.

he official Sony Xperia Twitter account has been teasing the launch by tweeting phrases like, "Wearable tech is in our DNA. Remember WALKMAN, now…?" and "One in three smartphone users want smart wrist wear."

The original Sony SmartWatch featured a 1.3-inch OLED display and was able to show emails, texts and tweets whilst acting as a media remote for your Xperia smartphone.

If the image Sony tweeted is anything to go by then it looks as though the new SmartWatch will feature an almost identical design however there has been rumour that it will add features such as NFC to keep it up-to-date with Sony's current Xperia line-up including the Xperia Z.

With wearable fitness tech like the Nike Fuelband and FitBit Flex both able to communicate with smartphones it could be possible that Sony will want to capitalise on the current 'smart' health boom by offering fitness features such as step-logging and sleep tracking.

With the unveiling due this week tech fans won't have long to find out what Sony is calling the next step after the SmartWatch.
