Originally, they were domesticated for food by the natives. Today, guinea pigs are still used for food, and they are considered a cultural delicacy.
Guinea pigs were first introduced to Europe during the 1600s by Spanish explorers and Dutch and English traders. It was here that guinea pigs were first adopted as pets.
Social Life and HousingGuinea pigs are social animals. Guinea pigs are the happiest when they have a buddy to live with. Common pairings include two females, two males (from the same litter), and one female and one male (neutered).
Guinea pigs can be housed outside or inside, though it is recommended that they live inside due to constant weather changes. If kept outdoors, guinea pigs can live in a hutch or a weatherproof cage. If they are living indoors, guinea pigs can be kept in a cage. Some of the more popular indoor cages include wire cages and glass aquarium tanks.
Where Did the Name Guinea Pig Come From?These cute, furry rodents became known as "pigs" due to their pig-like squeals. Guinea pigs and pigs have a similar built, sharing characteristics like a rounded rump, a stout neck, and large head relative to body size. "Guinea" most likely comes from a trading stop on the trans-Atlantic route Europeans traders used when traveling between the Old World and the New World.
The scientific name for the guinea pig is Cavia porcellus , which is Latin for "little pig."
Guinea Pig BreedsThere are eight popular guinea pig breeds:
- Abyssinian: An Abyssinian has ten "rosettes"--one on each shoulder, four across its body, one on each hip, and two on the rump.
- Coronet: A Coronet is a mix between a Silkie and a Crested. It has long hair like a Silkie and a crest like a Crested.
- Crested: A Crested has a single "rosette" on the top of its head.
- English: An English has short smooth hair.
- Silkie: A Silkie has long hair that flows back over its body.
- Peruvian: A Peruvian has long hair, just like a Silkie. But its hair flows over the whole body from the center and spreads out, covering its face.
- Teddy: A Teddy has short, rough hair that stands on end all over its body. It looks like a teddy bear.
- Texel: A Texel looks like a Silkie but has corkscrew curls.
