Firewire only makes the transfers faster, but in some camcorder models they don't support transfer of raw DV files through USB and I haven't found software that could capture DV AVI through USB. I don't know with your model but here's a rundown, a transfer from a 60 min. tape will consume as much as 15 to 20 GB that is the raw file, that is probably the highest quality u can get but in order to save space and view your file in another format preferably DVD then you need to convert it to MPEG-2. The raw file is in .AVI. I suggest using DVApp or WinDV for capturing then convert the format to a usable format. One caveat these capture software require firewire. Mao na I said na few camcorders and softwares have a feature na USB video capture. U can use Sonic MyDVD but somehow there is loss in quality and you need a powerful PC but it does the process in one shot, capture and convert. and requires Firewire..

For the average user, for conversion of raw file to MPEG or DVD format you may need TMPGENc, after all this is still free. Or if you want faster performance and better vid quality, you need Canopus PRoCoder.

Ok, so its pretty confusing but it works. SO I suggest, if you want high quality vids then get a firewire port, then capture the vids in high quality takes about 15G of space and hours then convert to DVD format or other format.
