ive lived here all my life and im amazed at how this place has grown. but like all places, it is not perfect. thats why i wanted to share my ideas on things we cebuanos can do to improve our beloved city. here are some of things that can be improved.
1. job/opportunity locations - the island of cebu has an elongated shape, ive noticed that development is mostly focused at the center or in the heart of cebu city. business parks, major companies, new companies, establishments etc are all at the center. what ive noticed is that those living in the north and south cities flock altogether towards our center. this causes a lot of traffic, during the morning rush our and at evening when its time to go home. early morning traffic can be draining. so i thought, why arent there any business parks, etc in the north/south areas like in talisay or in the north areas of mandaue like in consolacion, etc. why cant the overall development of cebu be evenly distributed along our major cities instead of just at the center?
2. road etiquette/discipline - this is one thing i noticed during my everday commute. drivers, specially PUJ drivers swerve left and right during mild to heavy traffic, they stop right in the middle for a few seconds just to wait for a passenger. this happens very often and if you add all those seconds wasted, thats already one reason for being late. i noticed in the US that bus stops are strictly followed. people ride and get off the nearest bus stop and just walk a block or 2 to their homes/office. here we have PUJ stops but are ignored most of the time. passengers get off wherever they want, ride in the middle of the street risking traffic. its a shame that we cant even discipline ourselves at the start of the day. i know this has some sort of long term effect on all of us and i could go on explaining but it would take up a lot of space so to put it in one word, i think its INEFFICIENT.
3. CAYGO / still, discipline - it looks like trash cans are transparent, or there are not enough of them. outside the office building, there are small patches of greenery growing among the litter of cigarette butts. people eating tempura or kwek2 just through their sticks on the ground. people just throw away their trash wherever they please. i know that maxx candy wrapper is tiny, and the ground is already filthy but if you add up all those minor instances of wanton littering, it will really make a difference. i dont think the answer is to put more trash cans, it really has to start with disciplining ourselves. not to offend anyone, but take a look at what happens when it rains in luzon. lets not wait to learn that kind of lesson the hard way.
4. street lights - im not sure if its expensive or what, but those dim orange street lights, i think they ought to be replaced by those bright ones. i would feel safer walking at night when its bright and i can clearly see the faces of strangers from 30 meters away. night life, whether its partying ot working, is very common in cebu. night folks need security too. sorry sa mga hilig ug ngit2x hehe.
5. consistency / diligence - this is a very broad statement. if you want to want to make cebu a better place, you have to be consistent. we all have to be consistent. you get up early for work, wait/get off at the right PUJ stop, to throwing your trash properly, these small changes matter alot and it takes more than just a few days or even weeks to see the outcome but you have to be consistent. dili lang kai mag binuotan for a couple of weeks then its back to your old habits. and i dont think theres anything wrong with reminding someone, even a stranger, that they shouldnt throw their trash anywhere. i know some people would be offended by this reminder, but i think what affects them is the fact that they still have to be reminded of this very basic rule. its hard but we all need to do our part. even those traffic enforcers and local authorities need to be diligent, we need them to remind us and to keep us safe. just last week, i saw 2 men grab this lady's purse and took off in just a few seconds on a motorcycle. there was barely enough time for anyone to react. mind you, this is a place uptown and theres usually a few CITOMs or policemen stationed. the traffic was very heavy that night.
i never really share my thoughts on the web or in public, only with a select few or whoever shares a glass wth me. so your thoughts are much appreciated, if you can share your own things to improve about our city, please do.
